TEGASEROD (te GAS a rod) treats irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) with constipation. It works by helping the muscles in your intestines move stool. This helps produce a bowel movement.

They need to know if you have any of these conditions:
Take this medication by mouth with water. Take it at least 30 minutes before meals. Take it as directed on the prescription label at the same time every day. Keep taking it unless your care team tells you to stop.
A special MedGuide will be given to you by the pharmacist with each prescription and refill. Be sure to read this information carefully each time.
Talk to your care team about the use of this medication in children. Special care may be needed.
Overdosage: If you think you have taken too much of this medicine contact a poison control center or emergency room at once.

If you miss a dose, skip it. Take your next dose at the normal time. Do not take extra or 2 doses at the same time to make up for the missed dose.

Diarrhea is a common side effect that usually happens in the first week of starting the medication. This will usually last only a few days and will not come back. You should not start taking this medication if you already have diarrhea or have diarrhea most of the time. Severe or prolonged diarrhea can lead to dehydration, a lack of fluids within your body. If you experience severe cramping, stomach pain, lightheadedness, dizziness or fainting accompanied by diarrhea, tell your care team immediately.
If you get new or worsening stomach pain with or without blood in your stools, call your care team right away.

Store at room temperature between 15 and 30 degrees C (59 and 86 degree F). Protect from heat and moisture. Get rid of any unused medication after the expiration date.
