Prerequisite

Completion of all core clerkships. Open to senior medical students in particular to those with interest or desire to gain further insight on pathology as a residency in their future.

Objectives

  • Develop a basic understanding of the histopathology of common diseases tissues that are examined at a general surgical pathology laboratory.
  • Develop a basic understanding of clinical pathology.
  • Develop a basic understanding of specimen gross examination.

Description

The pathology rotation affords 4th year medical students the opportunity to develop and understand the surgical pathology laboratory in an educational environment administered by a full-time surgical pathologist. Students are part of a team consisting of attending and pathology assistants. The department has no pathology residents or fellows.

Patient interaction and evaluation under the guidance of an attending Pathologist. The primary educational experience will be the one-on-one review and discussion of cases with the attending physician. The medical student will be expected to read on selected topics and show an understanding of the material.

Evaluation

Evaluations will be distributed by the UME department to the preceptor at the end of the rotation.
