Movement Disorder Diagnosis

Our experts use state-of-the-art tools to diagnose and evaluate movement disorders accurately, including:

  • Blood tests to rule out other conditions.
  • CT scans or MRIs to look at your brain and spinal cord.
  • DaTSCANs, or dopamine transporter scans, to assess dopamine levels in your brain to help diagnose Parkinson’s disease.
  • Electroencephalograms (EEGs) to assess the electrical activity in your brain.
  • Electromyograms (EMGs) to analyze the electrical signals and responses of your muscles and nerves.
  • Spinal taps to look for any abnormalities in your cerebrospinal fluid that could explain the reason you have a movement disorder.

Movement Disorder Treatment

We create personalized care plans based on your needs and symptoms. Our team offers a variety of evidence-based treatments on-site so you don’t have to travel far for the care you need.

A movement disorder or Parkinson’s treatment plan may include:

  • Neuro rehabilitation: Speech therapy, physical therapy and occupational therapy can help people with movement disorders increase their overall function. You may improve communication, build strength or learn to use assistive tools. Our therapists are all trained in the Lee Silverman Voice Treatment (LSVT), a treatment specifically designed for people with Parkinson’s disease.
  • Medications: There are multiple medications that can treat Parkinson’s and other movement disorders. Your neurologist prescribes a medication tailored to your needs, monitoring and adjusting your prescription as necessary.
  • Botulinum toxin (Botox) injections: During an outpatient visit, your neurologist delivers a Botox injection directly into your muscle. The medication helps your muscles relax by interfering with the neurotransmitters that signal muscle contraction. You may need injections every few months for lasting results.
  • Pump-delivered therapy: This treatment delivers medication in gel form directly to your small intestine. During a short procedure, your doctor places a gastrointestinal (GI) tube inside your body. The tube connects to a small pump worn outside the body containing the gel medication. Your doctor programs the pump to release the desired amount of medication. Pump-delivered therapy delivers a consistent, steady medication dose.
  • Deep brain stimulation (DBS): DBS uses mild electrical currents to stimulate specific areas of your brain. A neurosurgeon places wires (leads) in your brain that connect to a generator device placed beneath your skin. This treatment is only appropriate for highly select patients with Parkinson’s disease or disabling essential tremor. We work closely with neurosurgeons to choose appropriate patients carefully, based on brain imaging and thorough neuropsychological evaluations.
