Respiratory Institute Outcomes
Critical Care Medicine
Hospital-Acquired Infections
The goal of the Respiratory Institute is zero hospital-acquired infections. The institute’s quality team leads a multidisciplinary process to analyze and refine patient care to achieve that goal. Despite the COVID-19 pandemic, there was a decrease in MICU central line-associated bloodstream infections (CLABSI) in 2021.
MICU Central Line-Associated Bloodstream Infection Rates
2019 – 2021
CLABSI = central line-associated bloodstream infection, MICU = Medical Intensive Care Unit, SIR = standard infection ratio
The rate of CLABSI increased during 2020 likely related to the COVID-19 pandemic. Interventions to address the rise in infections led to a decrease in CLABSI in 2021. The MICU team continues to work to minimize the risk of hospital-acquired infections.
MICU Catheter-Associated Urinary Tract Infection (SIR)
2019 – 2021
CAUTI = catheter-associated urinary tract infection, MICU = Medical Intensive Care Unit, SIR = standard infection ratio
