Overview
As the #1 heart hospital in the country, patients are referred to Cleveland Clinic for a wide variety of cardiac issues. Our infectious disease endocarditis team consults on infections of native heart valves, prosthetic heart valves, vascular devices such as pacemakers and LVADs (left ventricular assist devices) and aortic or other vascular grafts. With the opioid crisis in this country leading to more IV drug injection, even more heart valve infections are being diagnosed.
Major symptoms of endocarditis or other vascular infections include fever, fatigue, heart murmurs, enlarged spleen, embolic episodes and areas of infarction
