Guided Imagery for Surgery

Free Audio Download Instructions

Guided imagery and relaxation help reduce anxiety and pain, and may help shorten your hospital stay after surgery. You can use Cleveland Clinic’s free guided imagery program before and after your surgery.

When should I listen to the guided imagery programs?

Although you may listen to the program at anytime, the preferred listening schedule is as follows:

  • Listen to Track 1 three or four times during the one-to-two weeks before surgery and also on the day of surgery.
  • Listen to Track 2 as soon after surgery as possible and often during your hospital stay and recovery.
  • Listen to Tracks 3 and 4 any time to help you feel relaxed and comfortable. Family members may also benefit from listening to these tracks.

Warning: Do not listen to the program while driving, operating machinery/equipment or taking part in any other activity that requires your full attention. Guided imagery is not intended to be an alternative to medical or surgical treatment. Please consult your healthcare provider for advice about a specific condition or treatment.
