Cleveland Clinic physicians and scientists may collaborate with the pharmaceutical or medical device industries to help develop medical breakthroughs or provide medical expertise or education. Cleveland Clinic strives to make scientific advances that will benefit patient care and support outside relationships that promise public benefit. In order for the discoveries of Cleveland Clinic physicians' and scientists' laboratories and investigations to benefit the public, these discoveries must be commercialized in partnership with industry. As experts in their fields, Cleveland Clinic physicians and scientists are often sought after by industry to consult, provide expertise and education.
To assure professional and commercial integrity in such matters, Cleveland Clinic maintains a program that reviews these collaborations and, when appropriate, puts measures in place to minimize bias that may result from ties to industry. Cleveland Clinic publicly discloses the names of companies when (i) its physicians/scientists receive $5,000 or more per year (or, in rare cases, equity or stock options) for speaking and consulting, (ii) its physicians/scientists serve as a fiduciary, (iii) its physicians/scientists receive or have the right to receive royalties or (iv) its physicians/ scientists hold any equity interest for the physician's/scientist's role as inventor, discoverer, developer, founder or consultant.* In publicly disclosing this information, Cleveland Clinic tries to provide information as accurately as possible about its physicians' and scientists' connections with industry.
As of 5/2/2019, Dr. Mathai has reported no financial relationship with industry that is applicable to this listing. Of all my care providers, Dr. Susan Mathia is my favorite. She seems to be genuinely concerned about me. She takes her time and actually listens to me. Listening to a patient is one of the most important characteristics a doctor can have.

Dr. Mathai (excuse my spelling) was wonderful. Even though I am an adult, my mom was with me in the exam room to better understand what the plan for my care is. Dr. M was more than gracious kind respectful and just plain wonderful. She spoke to my mother and I with confidence reassurance and just in a way that I feel completely comfortable and confident I am getting the best care. Dr. took her time explaining and was cautious in giving a quick diagnosis from my previous tests because she wanted to be 100% positive what is going on. I 100% respect that and am so grateful for being in her care.

Dr. Mathai took the time to answer all my questions and concerns about the new medication I'm getting, as well as explaining all possible side effects and alternative treatments. My one complaint was that she sort of tossed in a potential problem I may have and was then out the door before I felt I had an opportunity to ask more about it. She did order a follow-up test for the issue, so that will either put it to rest or give me the opportunity to discuss it further with her later. But it did leave me feeling a bit unnerved.
