Biography

About Gayan De Silva, MD

Gayan De Silva, MD, MS, is a staff surgeon in the Department of Vascular Surgery, Miller Family Heart, Vascular & Thoracic Institute. He sees patients at Fairview Hospital and Avon Hospital.

Specialty Interests: Open and endovascular approaches to peripheral arterial disease, aortic disease, thoracic outlet syndrome (neurogenic, arterial and venous), cerebrovascular/carotid disease (open procedures and stenting), treatment of deep venous thrombosis and May-Thurner syndrome, dialysis access creation, Nutcracker syndrome, and mesenteric ischemia

Experience: Physicians in the Department of Vascular Surgery perform more than 8,000 procedures annually for patients with a broad spectrum of vascular diseases. Dr. De Silva and his colleagues use both open and endovascular methods to achieve excellent outcomes and collaborate with cardiac surgery, cardiology and vascular medicine as needed to treat all types of vascular disorders.

Dr. De Silva is board certified in vascular surgery and is a Registered Physician in Vascular Interpretation.

Education: Dr. De Silva is a graduate of Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine, in Cleveland,OH, where he earned a Doctorate in Medicine and a Master’s in Applied Anatomy.He completed his general surgery residency at Barnes-Jewish Hospital, Washington University in St. Louis School of Medicine in St. Louis, MO. During his residency he also was a postdoctoral research fellow at Washington University in St. Louis School of Medicine. After finishing general surgery residency, he continued his specialty training there as a fellow in vascular surgery.

Dr. De Silva joined the Cleveland Clinic medical staff in 2023 following his vascular surgery fellowship.

Research, Publications and Speaking: Dr. De Silva is dedicated to improving patient outcomes and advancing surgical techniques to enhance patient care through research. He has coauthored research papers published in peer-reviewed medical and vascular surgery journals and is the lead author on chapters in several print and online vascular surgery textbooks. He has participated in oral and poster presentations at regional, national and international medical meetings, including the American College of Surgeons and Vascular Research Initiatives Conference. 

About Dr. De Silva: “One of the many things I enjoy about vascular surgery is the constant evolution of the field. We are always trying to push the envelope of what can be done to best take care of our patients, whether through open surgery or endovascular/minimally invasive surgery. There is as much art to vascular surgery as there is science and innovation. It is also a field that allows me to forge lifelong partnerships with my patients and their families. As a surgeon, my focus is on treating whatever pathology is preventing patients from having their best quality of life, and as a physician, my goal is to make sure that all their health concerns are addressed.”

Leisure Activities: In his leisure time, Dr. De Silva enjoys carpentry and woodworking. He and his wife love hiking and being outdoors and are trying to visit every national park in the United States. Avid cyclists, they particularly enjoy riding in the Metroparks and Cuyahoga Valley National Park

Staff were courteous and friendly. I did not wait very long in the waiting room or the exam room. The doctor discussed all information regarding the procedure. They were very flexible in scheduling my next appointment
