About Ahmed Sabe, MD

Ahmed El Ghamry Sabe, MD, FACC, FSCAI, is an interventional cardiologist in the Section of Regional Cardiovascular Medicine of The Tomsich Family Department of Cardiovascular Medicine, Miller Family Heart, Vascular & Thoracic Institute. He sees patients at Mercy Hospital, where he is the Executive and Medical Director of Cardiovascular Services; Director of Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory; and Co-Director of the Emergency Chest Pain Center.

Specialty Interests: Structural heart, aortic and mitral valve disease; coronary intervention

Experience: Dr. Sabe has more than 30 years’ experience in minimally invasive (interventional) and invasive treatments for heart and valve diseases. He has performed more than 20,000 invasive cardiology procedures over the course of his career to treat structural heart conditions and aortic and mitral valve disease.

In 1998 Dr. Sabe performed the world’s first-known, direct angioplasty in an emergency department to save the life of a heart attack patient at Mercy Medical Center.

Education: Dr. Sabe earned his medical degree from Kasr Al Ainy Medical School, University of Cairo and completed an internship at University of Cairo Hospitals and Clinics. He relocated to the United States for traineeships at the University of Texas in Houston, first in cardiopulmonology, gastroenterology and hematology at MD Anderson Cancer Center and then in cardiology at Texas Heart Institute’s St. Luke’s Episcopal Hospital (now Baylor Medical Center).

Dr. Sabe continued his training with an internship and residency in internal medicine at Hennepin County Medical Center, University of Minnesota Medical School, Minneapolis, where he served as chief resident in his final year of training. He pursued his specialty training in cardiology through a fellowship at the University of Arizona’s Maricopa Medical Center (now Valleywise Health), Phoenix, followed by an interventional cardiology fellowship at Massachusetts General Hospital, Harvard Medical School, Boston.

He also holds a certificate from the Case Western Reserve University Weatherhead School of Management Physician Executive Institute.

Dr. Sabe has been in leadership positions in cardiology at Mercy Hospital for more than 25 years: director, Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory (since 1995); medical director, Cardiovascular Services (since 1997); co-director, Emergency Chest Pain Center (since 1998); director, Mercy Heart Failure Service (since 2019); and executive director, Cardiovascular Services (since 2002).

Research, Publications and Speaking: Dr. Sabe has coauthored papers in leading cardiology journals on emergency cardiac care and presented abstracts and lectures at prestigious national medical meetings, including the National College of Chest Pain Centers and American Heart Association Scientific Sessions.
