About Karlee Hoffman, DO

Karlee Hoffman, DO, is a heart failure specialist in the Heart Failure & Cardiac Transplantation Section of the Tomsich Family Department of Cardiovascular Medicine, Sydell and Arnold Miller Family Heart, Vascular & Thoracic Institute. She sees patients at main campus.

Specialty Interests: Advanced heart failure, transplant, left ventricular assist devices (LVADs), cardiogenic shock, high risk cardiac disease in pregnancy

Experience: Cleveland Clinic's Department of Vascular Surgery performs more than 5,000 procedures annually for patients with a broad spectrum of vascular diseases at three inpatient, seven outpatient and four ambulatory surgery facilities. Our experts are national and international leaders in treating aneurismal disease of the thoracic and abdominal aorta, occlusive disease in the cerebrovascular circulation via both open and endovascular methods and the provision of dialysis access and minimally invasive treatments for venous disease. The Heart Failure & Cardiac Transplantation Section is part of Cleveland Clinic’s George M. and Linda H. Kaufman Center for Heart Failure Treatment and Recovery, one of the premier facilities in the United States for the care of people with heart failure. Center physicians aggressively pursue non-transplant options to benefit these patients and also continue to investigate and improve surgical treatments, such as LVADs, left ventricular reconstruction surgery and heart transplant. Cleveland Clinic's cardiac transplant program is one of the largest in the United States.

During her year as a Cleveland Clinic fellow in advanced heart failure, Dr. Hoffman performed more than 100 endomyocardial biopsies and more than 250 right heart catheterizations.

Success Rates: nearly one-third of our services are currently performed to treat those with atherosclerosis, we also provide a significant number of patients with care for aneurysms of the abdominal and thoracic aortas, and in increasing numbers, for those with venous disease.Success rates for specific procedures at Cleveland Clinic are available at https://my.clevelandclinic.org/departments/heart/about/outcomes-stats.

Education: Dr. Hoffman earned a Doctorate of Osteopathic Medicine from Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine in Philadelphia. She served her internal medicine residency followed by a cardiology fellowship with Allegheny Health Network, Pittsburgh, Pa. Dr. Hoffman completed her subspecialty training as a fellow in Advanced Heart Failure and Transplantation at Cleveland Clinic.

She was named to the Cleveland Clinic medical staff in 2020 on completion of her fellowship. She is board certified in Internal Medicine, Cardiovascular Disease, and Advanced Heart Failure and Transplant Cardiology.

Research, Publications and Speaking: As a cardiology fellow at Allegheny Health Network, Dr. Hoffman was an investigator on research studies on preeclampsia and the long-term risk of the development of cardiovascular risk factors and cardiovascular disease and a collaborative LVAD recovery study with The University of Utah using RNA tissue analysis to predict response to LVAD. She also was the lead fellow in development of a pilot program to provide heart-healthy diets for patients diagnosed with heart failure who met food insecurity criteria. She presented findings from these studies at regional and national medical meetings, including the American College of Physicians, American College of Cardiology, and American Heart Association.

About Dr. Hoffman  "I enjoy caring for advanced heart failure and transplant patients because I have the opportunity to build longstanding relationships with my patients and take care of them when they are at their most vulnerable state, with no other treatment options. This field is extremely high-risk, high-reward, and I would not want it any other way. Every time I am involved with a new heart transplant, I get excited because it is truly a miracle and such a wonderful gift of life. It is a privilege to take care of these patients, and I do not take this responsibility for granted.”

Leisure Activities: Dr. Hoffman enjoys traveling, hiking and being outdoors with her husband, young daughter and the family dog. She and her husband also spend a lot of time caring for and training the family’s Standardbred racehorses and watching their races.

Both Jack and I were very pleased with Dr Hoffman. She went into great detail regarding the amyloidosis. The weight/muscle loss, the liver failure is an indication of "end stage heart failure" which took us off guard. She also mentioned adding protein to his diet.

I'm so glad that I found Dr. Hoffman. After months of not knowing anything about what was going on with me, and feeling like I was left to fend for myself with another hospital she jumped right into trying to figure it out and explained everything thoroughly. I feel like I'm being taken care of properly.
