Leben Tefera, MD, is a staff physician in the Vascular Medicine Section of the Tomsich Family Department of Cardiovascular Medicine, Sydell and Arnold Miller Family Heart, Vascular & Thoracic Institute. He sees patients at Cleveland Clinic Main Campus.

Experience: The Section of Vascular Medicine in Cleveland Clinic’s Tomsich Family Department of Cardiovascular Medicine offers comprehensive care for diseases of the vascular and lymphatic systems, including hyper-coagulable disorders. The section is home to one of the most active vascular laboratories in the country, with more than 2,200 clinical studies performed per month.
Dr. Tefera is experienced in the medical management of patients with all forms of vascular disease to help them reduce their risk of blood vessel blockages as well as the treatment of patients who develop venous thromboembolism.

Education: Dr. Tefera earned his Doctorate of Medicine from the University Of Pittsburgh School Of Medicine, and completed his internal medicine residency at University Hospitals Cleveland Medical Center. During his residency Dr. Tefera fulfilled the requirements for the Leadership in Medical Education track and earned an Emotionally Intelligent Leader Certificate from Case Western Reserve University Weatherhead School of Management. He was selected to serve as Chief Medical Resident in his final year. He received his specialty training as a fellow in Vascular Medicine at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, an affiliate of Harvard Medical School.
Dr. Tefera was appointed to the Cleveland Clinic medical staff in 2020 upon completion of his fellowship.
Research, Publications and Speaking: Dr. Tefera has been an investigator on research studies related to cardiovascular diseases as well as global health and infectious disease. He has coauthored scientific papers on these studies published in peer-reviewed journals and presented the abstracts at leading medical meetings, including American College of Cardiology, Heart Failure Society of America and International Society for Heart and Lung Transplantation.

I always get a little nervous when I go to a doctor, but Dr. Tefera made me feel at ease and explained why I no longer had to take a medication and what I should do in the future, especially, if I was to have any type of surgery.

Dr. Tefera was extremely personable & very knowledgeable of my condition. He referred me to top notch specialists @ OSU Columbus. Dr.Tefera was most impressive. He took his time to explain the purpose of his role in my care, what his plan of action is and how he will continue to work with me to hopefully find out what caused the blood clots in my lungs and legs. I was exceptionally impressed with how this doctor took his time with me and answered my questions in detail without any reluctance. I am truly grateful for the time and energy he spent with me.
