About Erik Van Iterson, PhD, MS

Erik Hoon Van Iterson, PhD, MS, MA, is the Director of Cardiac Rehabilitation in the Preventive Cardiology & Rehabilitation Section in the Sydell and Arnold Miller Family Heart, Vascular & Thoracic Institute. He is also the Director of Metabolic Stress Testing Quality and Education in the Robert and Suzanne Tomsich Department of Cardiovascular Medicine. He sees patients at Cleveland Clinic main campus.

Education: Dr. Van Iterson holds a bachelor’s degree in human physiology from Michigan State University, East Lansing, MI; master’s degree in biology and neurobiology from DePaul University, Chicago, IL; a master’s degree in applied exercise physiology from the University of Illinois at Chicago College of Applied Health Sciences, Chicago, IL; and a doctorate in exercise physiology from the University of Minnesota, Minneapolis, Minn. He pursued advanced training in his specialty with fellowships in cardiovascular medicine at the Perelman School of Medicine, University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, and Mayo Clinic, Rochester, Minn., followed by a two-year American Heart Association fellowship in cardiovascular medicine, preventive cardiology and cardiac rehabilitation, also at Mayo Clinic. He joined the Cleveland Clinic staff in 2018.

Experience and Outcomes: Preventive Cardiology & Rehabilitation Section staff provide cardiac rehabilitation services for more than 31,000 patient visits annually across Cleveland Clinic campuses.

Publications: Dr. Van Iterson is the lead author on numerous scientific papers focused on clinical exercise physiology and cardiovascular and cardiopulmonary function published in refereed and respected medical and physiological journals, and has coauthored chapters on heart failure and exercise for three cardiology textbooks. He has presented and published more than three dozen research abstracts on various studies of exercise and heart failure and exercise and cystic fibrosis, among other related topics. As a fellow, he was an invited presenter at numerous local, national and international seminars and conferences.
