Doctor's condescending behavior was highly insulting. The first words out of her mouth was her telling us financial aid was available through welfare. We felt we had to justify our work life and that we had retired with full pensions and had medical coverage. It was clear that she was more concerned that she would receive her compensation than she was to treat the prostate cancer. My wife and I had been doing considerable research on treatments and wanted to weigh the pros and cons of each treatment. Every treatment has side effects and a track record of success. We heard that her expectation of success was around 80% for either beam radiation or for use of radioactive seeds. Before our appointment, we had discussed the prostate cancer experience and treatments used with several friends who had treatment and the side effects. We understand that each person is different. And the state of the disease varies from person to person. One person told how he had permanently lost his sense of taste and smell. We thought we would verify that experience with the doctor. On asking about the possibility that one could loose the sense of taste or smell, the doctor said that it never happens. It had to be caused by something else. She pointed at her groin area and said "the radiation treatment is way down here," Then pointed at her neck and said, "the taste buds are way up here." We also asked her about the new robotic surgery, we knew to be Da Vinci Surgical systems. The doctor seemed to discourage this approach because we would have to drive to a big city. I guess she thought we were too dumb to use a GPS and get to a big city hospital. At that point, we had no further questions or the doctor. She handed us papers describing the treatments. We arrived home and began reading the papers. Sure enough, one paper mentioned the possibility of loss of taste. My wife and I decided we would never have her as a physician since her behavior was so condescending. I guess she thought we were to stupid to read the papers she handed us.. We found the Da Vinci web site and located a a surgeon in Wooster, Ohio where we can inquire about robotic surgery. We have an appointment with this doctor before we make our final treatment decision. We want to consult about all options before we make a final decision.
