About Naoki Umeda, MD

Naoki Umeda, MD is an Integrative Medicine specialist with an interest in cancer, nutrition/food therapy, and therapeutic touch.  He is originally from Japan, where the average life expectancy is the longest in the world. He has more than 6 years of experience providing Integrative Medicine for cancer patients (Integrative Oncology).  After receiving his medical degree from a national medical school in Tokyo, Japan, Dr. Umeda trained as an Internal Medicine resident and Gastroenterology fellow in Tokyo.  He then completed an advanced fellowship of Hepatology (liver disease) and a fellowship of Gastroenterology Oncology at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota.

Based on his experience of treating patients in "clinically tough situations" such as liver transplant recipients and advanced stage cancer patients, Dr. Umeda became more interested in "whole person" and "Body/Mind/Spirit" care.  He then worked as an Integrative Medicine staff physician and combined Western Medicine with Eastern/Traditional Medicine such as acupuncture, Chinese herbal therapy, and Ayurveda.  He realized this blend would produce a beautiful "synergy effect" to relieve both physical and spiritual pain, and to improve quality of life for cancer patients.

Dr. Umeda provides one-hour Integrative Medicine consultations to create personalized treatment plans for patients at the Cleveland Clinic Wellness Institute.

I was also very impressed with Shantina in the Integrative Medicine office who called before my appointment with Dr Umeda to clarify medical record details and current medical situations. She seemed very well versed with medical issues and drugs - maybe she's a nurse - and she was very pleasant, articulate and patient.

Both my wife and I have had video visits with Dr Umeda, 1 each. We both feel that he's an indispensable staff member for the Integrative Medicine department of Cleveland Clinic. We especially were drawn to him for his gastroenterology/oncology background as well as the holistic approach to medicine. He is articulate and easy to understand, he listens very attentively and captures important details that a patient shares. He's compassionate. He demonstrates a healthy respect for mainstream medicine practices and is cautious in his comments and recommendations. My only disappointment was that he didn't recommend any reading to me about the intestinal flora and how they are affected by antibiotics, even though I asked. He said that the science was just changing too fast which may very well be the case. The extensive interview with him that was on CC's website was the deciding factor for us in seeking appointments with him. He's a tremendous asset for the Clinic and we are grateful to be able to access consults with him online.
