About Munir Ahmad, MD

Munir Ahmad, MD, BSc, MBBS, FRCSI, is a staff physician with the Congenital Heart Surgery Team in the Department of Cardiovascular Surgery, Miller Family Heart, Vascular & Thoracic Institute. He sees patients and performs surgery at Main Campus.

Specialty Interests: Cono-truncal anomalies, palliative surgery for single ventricle, adult congenital heart surgery, reoperations in congenital heart disease, coronary artery anomalies.

Experience: Dr. Ahmad has more than 30 years’ experience in adult and pediatric cardiac surgery, treating patients of all ages from neonates to adults. He is an expert in developing teams that perform high-risk, complex surgical procedures with excellent results and minimal morbidity and has specialized expertise in surgery for aortic root and coronary artery abnormalities.

Dr. Ahmad is a fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland.

Education: Dr. Ahmad received his medical degree from University of the Punjab, Pakistan, and completed his internal medicine and general surgery residencies at Nishtar Hospital, Multan, Pakistan. He relocated to Ireland where he placed first in the examination from the Fellowship of the Royal Colleges of Surgeons in Ireland, leading to his acceptance into the prestigious Dublin Region Surgical Training Program. He received his general surgery training at the leading teaching hospitals in Dublin through this program, followed by adult cardiac surgery training at University Hospitals of the West-Midland Region, United Kingdom.

As a mid-career surgeon, Dr. Ahmad completed a congenital cardiac surgery fellowship under The College of Physicians & Surgeons of Pakistan at King Abdulaziz Cardiac Center, Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. He was a staff cardiac surgeon there for seven years before joining the Cleveland Clinic Congenital Surgery Team in 2016.

Research Publications and Speaking: Dr. Ahmad has coauthored more than 60 scientific papers on complex surgery for congenital and pediatric heart anomalies published in leading peer-reviewed medical journals. He also has coauthored and presented more than two dozen research abstracts at major national and international surgical meetings.

About Dr. Ahmad: “With improvement in congenital cardiac surgical results, more patients are surviving into adulthood, and the population of adult congenital patients in the United States now exceeds that of children with heart disease. I believe my greatest strength is the ability to treat patients of all ages, thus providing them life-long surgical care. I enjoy complex cases and re-do surgical procedures, helping those patients other centers may not be able to treat.”

Leisure Activities: Outside of work, Dr. Ahmad enjoys travel, gardening and exploring the culinary arts.
