About Nathan Mesko, MD

Nathan W. Mesko, MD is the Section Head of Orthopaedic Oncology and Trauma, and holds his appointment in the Orthopaedic and Rheumatologic Institute at Cleveland Clinic.  In addition, he is co-director of the Sarcoma Center in the Taussig Cancer Institute, and holds an Assistant Professorship at the Cleveland Clinic Lerner College of Medicine

After completing his college education at Wheaton College in Wheaton, Illinois, Dr. Mesko attended Loyola School of Medicine, where he was named to the Alpha Omega Alpha honor society.  He continued his residency training in orthopaedic surgery at Cleveland Clinic, followed by the pursuit of an orthopaedic oncology fellowship at Vanderbilt University (Nashville, TN).  Here, he received extensive training in benign and malignant bone and soft tissue lesions, metastatic bone and soft tissue cancer, bone and soft tissue sarcoma excision and reconstruction techniques, and complex total hip and total knee primary and revision arthroplasty.  After completing his training in Nashville, Dr. Mesko was the recipient of the Hatcher Pathology Fellowship from the Musculoskeletal Tumor Society, where he utilized this scholarship to visit various high volume sarcoma centers around the world. These efforts were intended to build further collaboration in the world of clinical and basic science outcome research between sarcoma institutions around the world, as well as to be immersed in various unique technologies.  After returning from England, Dr. Mesko joined the faculty of Cleveland Clinic in 2014.

Dr. Mesko is certified in orthopaedic surgery by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery.  He specializes in bone & soft tissue sarcoma diagnosis and treatment. In addition, he also specializes in the treatment of metastatic disease, as well as osteoarthritis and avascular necrosis requiring total joint arthroplasty, including hip resurfacing procedure.  His practice also encompasses total joint revision surgery.

Dr. Mesko’s research interests include clinical outcomes with bone and soft tissue sarcoma treatments, as well as working to improve educational efforts to increase sarcoma awareness.  He is part of a national team that has worked on creating a national sarcoma registry, in an effort to improve functional and cancer outcomes in this rare malignancy.  He has been active in recruiting collaborative projects from around the world to Cleveland Clinic, in an effort to make sure that patients at Cleveland Clinic are part of the latest advances in oncology care effecting the musculoskeletal system.

Outside the hospital, Dr. Mesko and his wife, raise 2 daughters and a Rhodesian ridgeback.  In addition, he enjoys spending time in regions of the world such as Africa and Central America, helping to teach and provide orthopaedic care to areas where appropriate musculoskeletal care is lacking.  Most recently, has enjoyed being a part of Hospital Shalom, a mission hospital in Flores, Guatemala.  He enjoys triathlons, downhill skiing, and water skiing as hobbies.
