Industry Relationships

Cleveland Clinic physicians and scientists may collaborate with the pharmaceutical or medical device industries to help develop medical breakthroughs or provide medical expertise or education. Cleveland Clinic strives to make scientific advances that will benefit patient care and support outside relationships that promise public benefit. In order for the discoveries of Cleveland Clinic physicians' and scientists' laboratories and investigations to benefit the public, these discoveries must be commercialized in partnership with industry. As experts in their fields, Cleveland Clinic physicians and scientists are often sought after by industry to consult, provide expertise and education.

To assure professional and commercial integrity in such matters, Cleveland Clinic maintains a program that reviews these collaborations and, when appropriate, puts measures in place to minimize bias that may result from ties to industry. Cleveland Clinic publicly discloses the names of companies when (i) its physicians/scientists receive $5,000 or more per year (or, in rare cases, equity or stock options) for speaking and consulting, (ii) its physicians/scientists serve as a fiduciary, (iii) its physicians/scientists receive or have the right to receive royalties or (iv) its physicians/ scientists hold any equity interest for the physician's/scientist's role as inventor, discoverer, developer, founder or consultant.* In publicly disclosing this information, Cleveland Clinic tries to provide information as accurately as possible about its physicians' and scientists' connections with industry.

As of 8/11/2017, Dr. Appleby has reported no financial relationship with industry that is applicable to this listing. In general, patients should feel free to contact their doctor about any of the relationships and how the relationships are overseen by Cleveland Clinic. Public Health Service-Reportable Financial Conflicts of Interest. Cleveland Clinic scientists and physicians engage in basic, translational and clinical research activities, working to solve health problems, enhance patient care and improve quality of life for patients. Interactions with industry are essential to bringing the researchers' discoveries to the public, but can present the potential for conflicts of interest related to their research activities. Good experience with Dr. Appleby, had never seen her before, and was concerned about a condition which she diagnosed as something way less critical than I originally thought, and gently put my mind at ease. I would gladly use her again if I experienced symptoms that were in her scope of care.... td

Always gives good recommendations on what to discuss with other providers.

Dr. Appleby was wonderful!!! We did not feel rushed. She ( and the receptionist and the nurse assistant) all valued the pages of information we had brought from the past several years. They wanted all the information and Dr. Appleby read through many pages before she saw us. She asked questions based on that information and sought clarification where needed. She listened to our concerns and questions and provided information and examples to help us understand more about the disease. She gave examples of previous creative problem-solving to figure out the best solutions to our concerns. She guided the visit in flexible ways ensuring that our conversation addressed our concerns as they surfaced and interspersed her questions appropriately. She partnered with us - using her expertise and experience to enhance our understanding of my husband's medical condition and to ensure that we receive practical and realistic ways to address our concerns. She is tweaking the medication dosage and provided a clear chart and directions to guide us. Contacting a medical provider by email will be a new experience for us, but I know that if/when the need arises to share information with Dr. Appleby or to seek advice, she will reply and communicate to provide what is needed. Dr. Appleby was highly recommended multiple times and we are so glad that we decided to consult her. We are so grateful that Dr. Appleby is now my husband's neurologist and trust her to guide us on this journey with Lewy Body Dementia!

I did not really have an "exam" during this visit, so I would have checked "NA" for the above if given the opportunity. But the doctor did check various capabilities related to my condition.

First time visit to Dr. Kristin Appleby and she was EXCELLENT. She listened, was professional and very easy to talk to and pleasant. I really trusted her opinion and diagnosis. She gave me a lot of information and insight into my condition and it was an area of expertise for her. I felt very good after my appointment. I live 3 hours from Cleveland Clinic and wish I lived closer. The reputation, care and courtesy extended is the best.

Dr. Appleby never rushed me or made me feel like she was in a hurry. She spent a lot of time with me and my husband and answered all my questions. I came for a second opinion and the first opinion (not at Cleveland Clinic) was a different diagnosis. Dr. Appleby gave me a diagnosis that made sense to me, fit the symptoms and I trusted her completely.
