Charles Bernick, MD, MPH, is a staff neurologist with the Cleveland Clinic Lou Ruvo Center for Brain Health. Dr. Bernick has been involved in the field of Alzheimer’s disease research and treatment for over 30 years, beginning as the attending neurologist for the University of California, Davis Alzheimer’s Disease Diagnostic and Treatment Center. Dr. Bernick moved to Las Vegas in 1994 to join the University of Nevada School of Medicine. Since that time, he has directed the development of a statewide network of Alzheimer’s disease care.
In 2009, Dr. Bernick joined the Cleveland Clinic Lou Ruvo Center for Brain Health and has guided the Professional Fighters Brain Health study, a longitudinal cohort study of professional combatants aimed at understanding the effects of cumulative head trauma on brain structure and function.
He graduated summa cum laude from Rice University with a BA degree in history. He received his MD from University of Texas Southwestern, being elected to the medical honor society, alpha omega alpha. Dr. Bernick completed a neurology residency at the University of Miami, followed by a fellowship in neurology at the University of Arizona, and a Masters of Public Health at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas.

At the time when I first discussed going to the CC with my PCP, I was having a lot of trouble focusing, memory and so forth. A year later, when the appointment was made, my troubles were less prominent. I almost did not go through with the appointment, however with the time it took to book one, and due to Alzheimer's in my family history I decided I should make the appointment. During the appointment, I felt like I was probably wasting Dr. Bernick's time, but he never gave me that impression. He was very patient and explained things very well and took the time to give me examples while directing me on the questions he ran through with me.

Cleveland clinic was a wonderful place to go and I would recommend it to other people. I'm pleased that the doctor suggested that we have our next appointment with long distance care. It is more convenient for me and I don't need to go through all the traffic.

I tried to schedule an appointment with Dr. Bernick in the summer of 2023. For 3 months I kept calling for an appointment, I was told I couldn't schedule appointment because his calendar was closed and I would have to keep calling back to see when it would open for me to schedule an appointment. Finally, when the calendar was open, I had to wait six months just to get the appointment to see Dr. Bernick. Nine months is a very long time to wait to see a doctor. Dr. Bernick is a very good doctor. He was caring and took the time to listen to me about my concerns. I received excellent attention and care from Dr. Bernick and his staff the entire time I was there.

For three months, I had to repeatedly call the office to schedule an appointment because the doctor's calendar was closed. No one could tell me when the calendar was going to be open so I had to just keep trying. Finally, when I was able to make the appointment I was told I had to wait six months before I could get into see the doctor. Having to wait nine months to see a doctor is a very long time.

The only problem I had was the wait time for an appointment. My brother passed away in August of Alzheimer's and I was worried about myself. I waited until March 5th to get in to see the most incredible doctor, Dr. Bernic. Then I had to wait until April 16th to get an MRI and am now waiting until June 4th for a follow up appoint to see Dr. Bernic. I truly believe getting into the Cleveland Clinic at all is worth the weight but it is agonizing.
