About Alan Durkin, MD
Dr. Durkin was born in Chicago, IL. He graduated fourth in his class from Seabreeze Senior High School in Daytona Beach, FL, and received a full academic scholarship to the University of Miami. He graduated Magna Cum Laude from the University of Miami, and initially pursued a career in applied physics. He received his Masters Degree in Radiation Physics from the Rosalind Franklin University of Health Sciences in Chicago, IL, but then realized that his true passion rested in the practice of medicine.
He then matriculated into the University of South Florida Morsani College of Medicine with the intention of pursuing a career in the surgical arts. He immediately gravitated towards Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery because of its ability to enhance quality of life, and because of its succinct attention to detail. He completed a full five year general surgery residency training program at the University of South Florida. Subsequently, he undertook and successfully completed a two year Surgical Oncology fellowship at the H. Lee Moffitt Cancer Center. During his oncology fellowship, Dr. Durkin published over thirty peer reviewed papers regarding surgical oncology, aesthetic surgery, body contouring, breast reconstruction, and abdominal reconstruction. He then went on to complete a second fellowship in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery at the H. Lee Moffitt Cancer Center, and the University of South Florida. Dr. Durkin holds dual board certifications in General Surgery, and Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery. Subsequent to his Plastic Surgery fellowship, Dr, Durkin pursued and earned further fellowship training in Facial Aesthetic Surgery to additionally qualify him as a facial surgery specialist.
Dr. Durkin is the co-owner and Medical Director of Ocean Drive Plastic Surgery, which currently has locations in Vero Beach, FL, and Melbourne, FL. He was elected by his peers to serve as the Vice-Chairman of Surgery at Cleveland Clinic Indian River Hospital. He is an active member of the American Society of Plastic Surgery, the American Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, the International Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, the Southeastern Society of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, the Florida Society of Plastic Surgery, the Florida Society of Dermatologic Surgery, and the Indian River County Medical Society. He actively presents at both national and international meetings on the topics of facial rejuvenation, dermal filler therapies, revisional breast augmentation, and skin rejuvenation.
Dr. Durkin is an active member of the American Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, and has presented at the annual meeting every year for the last five years. He has served on multiple committees including the Emerging Trends/Technology Committee, the Electronic Communications Committee, and the Clinical Trials Committee. He is an active consultant for Allergan®, Merz Aesthetics®, and the
Musculoskeletal Tissue Foundation (MTF)®, and sits on the New Beauty Magazine® Medical Advisory Board. He is a faculty member and a Clinical Assistant Professor of Plastic Surgery at Florida State University, and Nova Southeastern University in Davie, FL. He is currently involved in multiple clinical trials regarding facial and breast aesthetic surgery, and regularly publishes on both topics. He is married to Dr. Roxanne Engel-Durkin Ph.D. Dr. Engel-Durkin holds a doctorate in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, and serves as a leader, national pharmaceutical administrator, wife, mother, professional problem solver, monster slayer, and part time superheroine for Dr. Durkin, and his daughter Illyana.
