Colds, the flu and COVID-19 can all start out the same — with a runny nose, congestion or a cough that sneaks up on you. That can make it hard to tell what you’re coming down with.
But as they ramp up, each virus tends to follow its own pattern. Here’s a quick overview:
Colds are common and usually mild. Most people get a few every year. They usually come with a runny or stuffy nose, sneezing, cough, sore throat and mild fatigue.
The flu usually hits you fast — and it hits harder than a cold. You may have a fever, body aches, a sore throat, chills and congestion. It can leave you feeling wiped out for a few days, or even a week or more. Sometimes, the flu can lead to bigger problems, like pneumonia, especially if you’re older or have ongoing health concerns.
COVID-19 symptoms can range from mild to serious. It spreads through droplets (think sneezes and coughs) and may cause cough, congestion, shortness of breath, brain fog, vomiting or diarrhea, body aches, fever, fatigue —and, sometimes, loss of taste or smell.
Sometimes, the best thing you can do is stay home and rest. Time, plenty of fluids and maybe some over-the-counter medicine are often all you need.
You can also try simple at-home remedies, like:
If you’re under the weather — with a cold, the flu or COVID-19 — staying home gives your body a chance to rest and keeps germs from spreading.

IMPORTANT: If you’re having trouble breathing, have chest pain, or feel dizzy or confused, go to the emergency department or call 911.
There’s no test for the common cold, and most people recover with rest. But the flu and COVID-19 can sometimes lead to more serious illness — especially for people at higher risk. That’s when testing can help.
You may want to test for the flu or COVID-19 if you:
At-home tests are available if you want quick answers, especially if you’re at higher risk or around others who are. Your provider may also recommend or order a flu or COVID-19 test during an in-person visit.
