Understanding Children’s Acute Rehabilitation Care
When your child stays in the hospital after a serious illness or injury, major surgery or a big procedure, they may need a little more time to recover before going home. We may recommend acute rehabilitation. Our children’s acute rehabilitation centers around kids with things like:
- Traumatic brain injuries
- Epilepsy that requires surgery
- Spinal cord injuries
- Bone, joint and soft tissue injuries or conditions
- Spinal fusion or traction
- Burns
Why acute rehabilitation is important
Acute rehabilitation gives your child a place to recover and get stronger between their hospital stay and going home. They’ll stay in a comfortable room and have around-the-clock medical care.
They’ll also get rigorous therapy every day. We set goals based on their needs and abilities so they can:
- Improve strength, balance, mobility or speech as much as possible
- Feel more confident about their abilities
- Become as independent as possible
- Learn how to use assistive technology and tools if needed
Our team will work with your family to help you learn how to support your child with their recovery and daily routine at home.

What a typical day is like in acute rehab
Your child’s day will start early. Lights are on at 7 a.m., and breakfast is at 7:30. After that, they’ll follow a structured, highly personalized schedule. Everything we do is built around their needs. This includes ones that reach beyond physical rehab.
If your child stays with us during the school year, we’ll set aside time for them to work on their studies and do homework. They’ll also have time to rest, eat and see family and friends during visitation periods. Quiet time starts at 8 p.m. to help them wind down and prepare for bed.
We break up things like therapy and homework throughout the day. We want to add variety to your child’s schedule and give them time to rest between therapy sessions.
