GUAIFENESIN (gwye FEN e sin) treats cough and chest congestion. It works by thinning and loosening mucus, making it easier to clear from the head, throat, and lungs. It belongs to a group of medications called expectorants.

They need to know if you have any of these conditions:
Take this medication by mouth with water. Take it as directed on the label. You can take it with or without food. If it upsets your stomach, take it with food. Do not use it more often than directed.
Talk to your care team about the use of this medication in children. While it may be given to children as young as 12 years for selected conditions, precautions do apply.
Overdosage: If you think you have taken too much of this medicine contact a poison control center or emergency room at once.
NOTE: This medicine is only for you. Do not share this medicine with others.
This does not apply. This medication is not for regular use. It should only be used as needed.

Do not treat a cough for more than 1 week without consulting your care team. If you also have a high fever, skin rash, continuing headache, or sore throat, see your care team.
For best results, drink 6 to 8 glasses of water daily while you are taking this medication.
