Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH)

Institute urologists have extensive experience with a wide array of surgical and minimally invasive office-based treatments for Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH) encompassing glands of all sizes. Innovative techniques such as single port transvesical robotic simple prostatectomy have facilitated reduced length of stay for our patients, with same day discharge becoming the standard for this technique. Holmium laser enucleation (HoLEP) volume continues to rise, and most patients are discharged on the day of surgery, as well. For men who desire surgery but want to minimize the risk of retrograde ejaculation, the most common side effect of BPH surgery, ejaculatory hood-sparing photoselective vaporization of the prostate (PVP) and aquablation have an increasing role.

In the office setting, urologists perform a high volume of minimally invasive surgical treatments (MIST)s under both local anesthesia only, and nitrous oxide. These procedures are best suited for men who want to stay out of the operating room, and who want to minimize the risk of sexual side effects. An increasing number of patients elect for MIST therapies as a means to stop oral BPH medications.

The center continues to invest in novel BPH therapies, and now offers aquablation and the temporarily implanted nitrinol device (iTind™) to patients across Ohio. Aquablation delivers comparable surgical relief to other surgical options, with the added benefit of ejaculatory function preservation in most patients. iTind further expands the armamentarium of office-based MISTs.
