Description
The purpose of this study is to learn about how deep brain stimulation (DBS) affects brain and muscle activity in those with essential tremor (ET). The effect of therapeutic and non-therapeutic stimulation settings will be assessed. Additionally, DBS effects in the presence and absence of a tremor mitigating (non-DBS) condition(s) will be studied. Also of interest are differences in stimulation effects while at rest versus while performing a task. These effects will be compared between participants with ET who either do or do not currently have DBS implanted, as well as individuals who do not have any movement disorders.
Potential non-DBS conditions are listed below. You may be a part of one or more condition group, barring any contraindications or potentially harmful combinations.
- Limb cooling
- Peripheral nerve stimulation
- Alprazolam (XANAX) administration
- Alcohol consumption
Inclusion Criteria
- 40-80 years of age
- Diagnosed with ET ≥3 years OR healthy control
For those with ET and DBS:
- Has had DBS implanted and been treated ≥3 months
Exclusion Criteria
- Secondary Parkinsonism, stroke, or progressive central nervous system disease other than ET
- Presence of active psychiatric symptoms other than depression or anxiety
- History of cognitive impairment meeting criteria for dementia
- Motor impairment impacting test responses (i.e., orthopedic injury or disease)
- Currently taking medications with Antabuse-like effects (e.g. Flagyl, Bactrim, Tindamax)
