Description
To help determine the long-term effects of repetitive head trauma and factors that put certain individuals at higher risk of developing chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE). Presently, we lack good clinical tools to understand whether professional athletes are in danger of developing permanent brain damage or are already on a path of impaired brain function.
Inclusion Criteria
18 years of age and older (male or female)
Active or retired individuals licensed for professional boxing or mixed martial arts with at least 10 professional fights on record; active or retired professional athletes potentially exposed to repetitive head injuries, such as professional bull riders, hockey players or motorsports drivers; or individuals that have not participated in combat or contact sports such as rugby, football, hockey, soccer or rodeo at a high school or above level
Fluent in English
Willing to consent to APOE genotyping and other DNA analysis
Exclusion Criteria
Cannot undergo an MRI scan
