State-of-the-Future Healthcare
By the time Toby Cosgrove, MD, transitioned from his role as CEO in 2017, he had overseen a transformation of patient care delivery, the Clinic’s global expansion, and raised its reputation for quality, innovation and patient experience. Tomislav Mihaljevic, MD, was named CEO and President of Cleveland Clinic following Dr. Cosgrove's retirement. Dr. Mihaljevic's first years were focused on quality and patient safety, with a goal of making Cleveland Clinic “the best place for patient care and the best place to work in healthcare."
A research team led by Stanley Hazen, MD, PhD, makes several pioneering discoveries in atherosclersosis and inflammatory disease, including the seminal discovery linking the gut microbiome pathways to cardiovascular disease (CVD) pathogenesis and the development of heart failure and chronic kidney disease. In 2017, Dr. Hazen was recognized as a Distinguished Scientist by the American Heart Association.
Robert E Rich succeeds A Malachi Mixon III as Chair of the Board of Trustees in 2011.
Eric Roselli, MD, develops a minimally invasive alternative to repair acute aortic dissection, a tearing of aortic tissue that causes internal bleeding and often death in patients who are ineligible for open-heart surgery.

The new, 60-bed inpatient hospital, Cleveland Clinic Rehabilitation Hospital, Beachwood, features private rooms and state-of-the-art rehabilitation equipment to treat patients affected by stroke, spinal cord injury, brain injury, amputation, neurological disorders and orthopedic conditions.
A 120,000-square-foot pediatric outpatient center opens. The first freestanding outpatient facility for Cleveland Clinic Children’s houses all pediatric ambulatory services under one roof.

Tom Mihaljevic, MD, succeeds Delos M Cosgrove, MD, as CEO and President of Cleveland Clinic. Dr. Mihaljevic also serves as Chair of the Board of Governors. Dr. Mihaljevic galvanized caregivers with calls for greater focus on quality, safety and the caregiver experience. System-wide, daily tiered huddles were begun to address problems in real time; serious safety events were reduced; and time was used more efficiently.

A state-of-the-future, interdisciplinary Health Education Campus will open its doors in Cleveland in April 2019, reflecting an effort by Case Western Reserve University and Cleveland Clinic to prepare students to lead in a new era of healthcare delivery.

Transplant triumphs
In 2019, Cleveland Clinic performs a record number of transplants — a total of 897 including heart, kidney, liver and lung.
Live birth after deceased donor uterine transplant
Cleveland Clinic is the first in North America to deliver a baby following a uterus transplant from a deceased donor, as part of an active clinical trial. In 2016, Cleveland Clinic performed the nation's first uterus transplant; however, the patient developed complications that necessitated the removal of the transplanted uterus.
Indian River Medical Center and Martin Health System join the Cleveland Clinic health system.
Cleveland Clinic performs its first in utero fetal surgery.
