Pain Medicine Evaluations at Cleveland Clinic

Pain can wear you down — physically, mentally and emotionally. Even if it only lasts a short time, you may find you:

  • No longer enjoy your favorite activities
  • Feel more down or anxious than usual
  • Struggle to get a good night’s sleep

This kind of pain can be complex and difficult to manage. And while we may not always be able to stop it completely, we can work to reduce its impact and help you respond to it in new ways.

It isn’t typically a quick fix — more often, it’s a process. It may take some trial and error to find what works best for you. That’s why evaluations are important.

You’ll meet first with the specialist who will oversee your care. This visit lets them learn more about you and how chronic pain affects your life. It also gives you a chance to ask questions and share any concerns about treatment. If you already know what’s causing your pain, you and your provider may start talking about the next steps right away.

If the reason is unknown, you may need some tests to help us uncover the source, like:

  • Diagnostic nerve block: Precisely pinpoints the pain source
  • CT scan or MRI: Uses special imaging to diagnose injuries and other health conditions in your bones, tissues and organs
  • Psychological testing: Gauges how pain affects your mental and emotional well-being
  • Diet and nutrition analysis: Checks to see if you regularly eat foods that can trigger inflammation

Your Pain Medicine Plan at Cleveland Clinic

After your evaluation, our pain medicine team will go over their recommendations for your personalized plan. Depending on the type of pain you have — or what’s causing it — you may not achieve complete relief. But we’ll focus on reducing your pain, improving your quality of life and getting you back to daily tasks and activities. Your plan could include a mix of approaches, from conservative treatments to surgery. We may recommend:

Home remedies

If your pain started with a recent injury, you may be able to use some of these therapies at home:

  • RICE method (rest, ice, compression and elevation)
  • Heat and cold therapy
  • Lifestyle changes like nutrition and stress management
  • Exercise and strength training

Physical and occupational therapy

We may recommend physical and occupational therapy to help you:

  • Build strength
  • Move better
  • Minimize pain
  • Find new ways to do daily tasks

Mental health care

Psychotherapy (talk therapy) might be helpful if your pain is affecting your thoughts and emotions — often triggering stress, anxiety or depression. Our mental health specialists are here to listen and offer support, along with strategies to manage how you experience pain.

Complementary therapies

Your care team may talk with you about options like yoga, chiropractic adjustment, massage therapy and acupuncture alongside traditional medical treatment. These complementary medicine techniques may offer added support in managing your pain.

Medications

We may also recommend pain relievers (analgesics) and other medications. These could range from over-the-counter pills or creams to prescriptions like muscle relaxers, antidepressants and corticosteroids. We’ll go over all the benefits and risks with you before you start taking it.

Medical devices and procedures

For severe pain that doesn’t respond to other therapies, we may use more advanced treatments, like electrical nerve stimulation, botulinum toxin (Botox®) injections, analgesic pumps, radiofrequency ablation — or even surgery. Our team will guide you through your options and help you understand what to expect every step of the way.

What’s Next?

Does it feel like pain has taken over everything in your life? It can drain your energy, dampen your mood — and get in the way of the things you enjoy. Our team is here to help you turn things around. We’ll work with you to figure out what’s going on and build a personalized plan that fits your needs and helps manage your pain. One step at a time, we’ll focus on what matters most to you.
