Deciding if Cosmetic Injectables Are Right for You
If you’re interested in cosmetic injectables but are unsure if they’re right for you, schedule a consultation with an expert at Cleveland Clinic.
During your consultation, you’ll talk about your goals and expectations when it comes to injectables. Your provider will go over your medical history, evaluate the areas you want to treat, explain the available options and answer any questions you may have.
You can also ask to see before and after photos of others who’ve used injectables. When considering a cosmetic procedure — even a nonsurgical option like injectables — look for a cosmetic surgeon or dermatologist who has the necessary training and experience.
We want you to leave this appointment with the knowledge you need. We’ll go over the benefits and risks of injectables and help guide you to the best option for you

When it comes time for treatment, there are several different types of injectables available. They can soften fine lines and wrinkles, enhance your bone structure, contour your face, improve scars and dissolve unwanted fat. Your provider will talk to you about the best option for you. These types of injectables can be done in your provider’s office with little or no recovery time. The types of injectables we offer include:
Dermal fillers
Dermal fillers can plump (volumize) thin lips, enhance bone structure, contour your face and soften facial fine lines and wrinkles, as well as improve the look and appearance of recessed scars.
Fat injections
Fat injections can help reduce wrinkles and diminish acne scarring by injecting fat collected from your own body.
Kybella®
If you’ve been bothered by your “double chin,” Kybella® may be an option for you. A provider injects deoxycholic acid, a naturally occurring molecule in your body, into the fat under your chin, which destroys fat cells.
Neuromodulators
You may have heard of Botox®, Dysport® and Xeomin®. These neuromodulators use botulinum toxin to help treat frown lines, forehead creases and crow’s feet near your eyes as well as many other areas of the face. Their effects last up to six months.
What to expect during your treatment
The good news about cosmetic injectables? Your recovery time is minimal. Depending on what type of injectable you get, you can typically get back to your daily routine soon after treatment. However, you may experience some tenderness, bruising, swelling or redness.
Most treatments can be done in your provider’s office in a short period of time. Your provider will prep your skin with an antibacterial agent and possibly a topical numbing agent. Depending on the type of injectables, they’ll use a small needle or cannula (a small tube inserted into the skin) for a series of injections.
While the results can vary, certain forms of cosmetic injectables may need to be repeated every couple of months to maintain results. Sometimes, it may also take several rounds of treatment for best results.
Insurance Coverage for Cosmetic Injectables
Cosmetic procedures, including injectables, are often considered elective and aren’t typically covered by most health insurance plans. If your treatment isn’t covered by insurance, we may be able to provide some financing options.
Follow-Up Care
Your healthcare team will go over any at-home care depending on the type of cosmetic injectable you get. You can manage any side effects — like tenderness, bruising, swelling and redness — at home with topical icing and Tylenol®, and they should improve within hours or a few days.
