Cleveland Clinic Community Care offers board-certified internal medicine physicians who care for adults of all ages. They provide comprehensive primary care to help keep you healthy and thriving through the years.
Comprehensive, coordinated Primary Care
Cleveland Clinic Community Care will provide comprehensive and coordinated care for you throughout your adult life. Our internal medicine physicians care for you starting at age 18. They prevent, diagnose and treat common adult problems and combinations of problems. As you age, they can work closely with our board-certified geriatricians — successful aging specialists who see you starting as early as age 50 to help you avoid future health problems and to manage complex age-related issues later on.
Your primary care providers will get to know you and your unique health needs, ensuring you receive the screenings, immunizations and treatments you need to stay healthy through the years. They will refer you to specialists when needed, help coordinate your care, and keep track of your overall health.
Team approach to Primary Care
Your internal medicine physician will lead a team of specially trained nurses and physician assistants. Licensed and board-certified to diagnose and treat illness, and prescribe medicine, the nurses and PAs collaborate with your doctor as well as pharmacists, social workers and coordinators to offer you convenient, accessible care.
What is an Internal Medicine Physician?
Internal Medicine physicians, or internists, are specialists trained to apply clinical expertise to the diagnosis, treatment, and compassionate care of adults across the spectrum from health to complex illness. Rather than focusing on one part of the body – such as your heart or your bones, as a specialist does – an internist knows about all the adult body systems. They have had special study and training focusing on the prevention and treatment of adult diseases.
Whether you have a sudden illness, a chronic condition or several health problems at once, your internal medicine physician can help. They are specially trained to deal with whatever issues a patient may have, no matter how complex. Internists get to know you and your health issues, give you your annual checkups, and make sure you get the tests and immunizations you need to stay healthy.
Internists encourage you to embrace wellness. They are trained in women’s health, mental health and substance abuse care. And you won’t have to see a specialist for common eye, ear, skin, nervous system or reproductive problems. Your internist can treat those, too.
Your Primary Care Team
Your internal medicine physician leads your primary care team, which includes specially-trained advanced practice providers. They are licensed and board-certified to screen, diagnose, treat and educate you about health issues, and include:
- Certified Nurse Specialist (CNS)
- Certified Nurse Practitioner (CNP)
- Physician Assistant (PA)
Also working with your internist on your primary care team are:

If a serious problem is found, your primary care team will refer you to a specialist at Cleveland Clinic and help you navigate today’s complex healthcare system. Your internist communicates with your specialist to keep track of your progress and provide you with coordinated and comprehensive care.

- Internists are called “the doctor’s doctor.” Because internists are skilled at uncovering the cause of puzzling medical problems, other doctors often seek their input.
- Medical specialists were internists first. With additional training, Internists can specialize in adolescent medicine, allergy and immunology, cardiology, endocrinology, gastroenterology, geriatrics, hematology, infectious disease, nephrology, oncology, pulmonology, rheumatology or sports medicine.
