Nursing at Cleveland Clinic Indian River Hospital Journey to Pathway to Excellence Program®
Cleveland Clinic Indian River Hospital is pursuing the Journey to the American Nurses Credentialing Center's (ANCC) Pathway to Excellence Program® designation. The designation signifies a commitment by the organization to develop a culture of collaboration and empowerment for the nursing staff through a framework that includes:
- Shared decision-making: Involve direct care nurses in the decision-making of organizational shared governance initiatives, operational decisions including changes in practice and workflow, the interdisciplinary process addressing ethical concerns, product evaluations and input into the hiring of nursing staff.
- Leadership: Support collaborative decision-making by ensuring leaders are accessible and encourage direct care nurse feedback.
- Safety: Foster a respectful workplace culture and protect the well-being of nurses, staff and patients through safety policies and processes that include measures to prevent violent incidents, address staffing concerns when there are fluctuations in patient acuity and transitions of care.
- Quality: Focus on improving patient outcomes through initiatives that are evidence-based, implemented based on internal and external benchmarking, include revising patient care standards and policies as well as staffing education.
- Well-Being: Create opportunities to develop a balance between work and personal life through flexible scheduling and innovative strategies.
- Professional Development: Provide comprehensive orientations for smooth transitions with the support of mentors, preceptors or other nursing experts, recognize the importance of lifelong learning, professional development activities and ongoing education.
Is the Organization’s Culture Evaluated as Part of the Credentialing Process?
Yes, the credentialing program is comprehensive. Once the organization has undergone a successful Pathway Standards document review, its nurses will complete an independent and confidential Pathway Survey to validate that it has created a culture that fosters collaboration and empowerment. Cleveland Clinic Indian River Hospital began the application process in March 2024 and is projecting to complete the process by April 2025.

Who We Are
Garnett Lunsford Radin, a registered nurse, personally funded a 21 bed facility that opened in 1932 as Indian River Hospital. Over the years this small hospital grew to a 332 bed not-for-profit acute care medical center now known as Cleveland Clinic Indian River Hospital. We are home to 620 RNs and APRNs.
Cleveland Clinic Indian River Hospital nurses take pride in caring for their hospital and clinic based patients, covering more than 30 specialties on the Treasure Coast of Florida. The diversity of the nurses at Cleveland Clinic Indian River Hospital are a reflection of the communities they serve and positions them to provide comprehensive, culturally sensitive care to meet all their patient’s diverse and individualized needs.
Professional Practice Model
The Cleveland Clinic Indian River Hospital nurses use the guiding principle of the Nursing Professional Practice Model (PPM) that supports our organizational mission, vision values and care priorities. The foundation for the PPM is based on Henderson’s Nursing Need Theory and a Team of Teams approach, Strategic Leadership, Engagement and Professional Governance. The PPM includes four domains that support excellent nursing practice. These are Quality & Safety, Relationship-Based Culture, Research, Evidence-Based Practice & Innovation and Professional Practice & Development.
