Description
What is the purpose of this study?
This study aims to explore how aerobic exercise affects motor function, cognitive abilities, multitasking, and brain activity in people with Parkinson’s disease (PD) who have undergone deep brain stimulation (DBS) surgery using the Medtronic Percept DBS system. We aim to better understand how exercise affects the brain and body and how it can be used as a therapy for PD.
What does participation involve?
Participants will be randomly assigned to one of two groups:
- Forced Exercise Group – Stationary cycling with assistance from the bike to pedal faster.
- Voluntary Exercise Group – Stationary cycling on your own.
Study Activities (all exercise and testing takes place at Cleveland Clinic Walker Center)
- Exercise sessions: 3 times/week for 8 weeks at the Walker Center
- Assessments: Motor and cognitive tests, walking tests, dexterity tests, and questionnaires.
- Neural Recordings: Brain activity will be measured using EEG and your DBS device.
- Activity Tracking: You will wear a Garmin smartwatch for the duration of the study to monitor daily physical activity.
Study Timeline (~24 weeks total)
- 2 Testing Visits followed by an 8‑week observation period
- 2 Testing Visits followed by an 8‑week exercise period
- 2 Testing Visits followed by a 4‑week follow‑up period
- 2 Final Testing Visits
Compensation
Participants will receive a stipend for each of the 8 testing visits and parking vouchers or bus passes for each testing visit and all exercise sessions.
Inclusion Criteria
You may qualify if:
- You have been diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease.
- You have undergone DBS surgery using the Medtronic Percept DBS system.
- You are able to exercise on a stationary bike.
