Biographical Sketch
Victor Warren Fazio, MB, BS, FRACS, FACS, was born in Sydney, Australia. For more than 25 years, he has served as Chairman of Colorectal Surgery and Vice-Chairman of the Division of Surgery at Cleveland Clinic. He is also Professor of Surgery both in the Department of Colorectal Surgery at Cleveland Clinic through the Health Sciences Center of The Ohio State University, and at the Lerner College of Medicine at Case Western Reserve University.
He is board-certified in colon and rectal surgery with many clinical interests, including Crohn's Disease and ulcerative colitis, colorectal cancer, and pelvic floor reservoir procedures for ulcerative colitis and familial polyposis. As an innovator, he also pioneered a technique allowing patients to avoid colostomies.
Dr. Fazio was given the Rupert B. Turnbull, Jr., M.D., Chair in 1995. He has been named one of the country's top cancer doctors for women by Good Housekeeping magazine, and one of the best doctors in America by American Health magazine. He also received the Premier Physician Award by the Crohn's & Colitis Foundation in 1992. Under his co-direction, treatment for digestive diseases at Cleveland Clinic is ranked #2 in the nation in U.S. News & World Report magazine's 2007 survey of America’s top hospitals.
In 2000, Dr. Fazio was the first recipient of Cleveland Clinic's Master Clinician Award, given to one of 1,500 Cleveland Clinic physicians annually. He was also the first to be awarded the Al and Norma Lerner Humanitarian Award, an honor awarded by Cleveland Clinic to individuals who exemplify the highest values of the medical profession.
A frequent invited lecturer at national and international medical meetings, Dr. Fazio has authored more than 500 scientific papers on colorectal topics, including ostomy management, surgical management of Crohn's Disease, ulcerative colitis, and surgical treatment for colorectal cancers. He has either authored or co-authored 10 books.
