Nutritional Counseling

Individualized nutritional counseling is an outpatient service available through the Center for Diabetes and Nutrition at Cleveland Clinic Martin Health to help participants learn how to eat healthy and enjoy delicious meals. In a one-hour private session, our registered dietitian will help participants plan a healthy diet based on lifestyle, medical history, food and preferences. Nutritional counseling is designed to benefit anyone who wants to achieve optimal nutritionfrom children to adults, pregnant women to athletes, we will customize a program that’s right for you.

Whether you have a chronic health condition such as heart disease or high blood pressure, or you want to lose weight, a one-on-one consultation with one of our registered dietitians will help improve your health and well-being. We offer an integrated approach to manage your health and wellness. During the one-hour session the dietitian will:

  • Obtain a complete medical and nutrition assessment.
  • Analyze and understand your personal and lifestyle goals. 
  • Help you recognize your behaviors to work towards change.
  • Educate you on how nutrition and diet can help prevent and improve your health condition.
  • Work with you to develop and implement an individualized and nutritionally balanced meal plan that is realistic for you.
  • Provide you with tips for shopping, eating out, and planning meals and exercise.

Medicare Weight Management Program

Medicare Weight Management Program

The Center for Diabetes and Nutrition at Cleveland Clinic Martin Health is pleased to provide the Medicare Weight Management program to help older adults with obesity shed extra pounds and lead a healthier lifestyle. To be eligible, you must have a body mass index (BMI) equal to or greater than 30 and have a physician referral. Program participants receive intensive behavioral therapy and ongoing counseling under the guidance of a registered dietitian.

Medicare will reimburse for limited nutrition services, such as counseling for patients with diabetes or kidney disease. Medicare also covers intensive behavioral therapy for obesity. Please ask us about the requirements for Medicare reimbursement by calling 772.223.4916.

Diabetes Education

Diabetes Education

Through one-on-one consultation with both a diabetes registered nurse and a registered dietitian, individuals are able to improve diabetes self-care skills and enhance their quality of life. Our programs for adult, pediatric and gestational diabetes are recognized by the American Diabetes Association. Experienced, certified diabetes educators plan and conduct the program, which is designed for people with Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes. The program includes one-on-one counseling and group classes. Family members are encouraged to attend.

You will learn about:

  • Diabetes nutrition.
  • Medications.
  • Exercise.
  • Stress control.
  • Personal health habits, including skin, foot, dental care and more.
  • Prevention, detection and treatment of acute and chronic complications.
  • Glucose monitoring.

Insulin pump training is conducted by a certified insulin pump trainer. Individual classes are available for children, those with special needs or those who speak Spanish. 

The cost will depend on the type of education your physician has recommended. Most insurance companies and Medicare cover the cost of this program.
