Parkinson’s Fitness Programs

Parkinson’s Fitness Programs

Punch Out Parkinson’s

This group training incorporates boxing with other exercises to improve strength, balance, mobility and quality of life for individuals living with Parkinson’s disease.

Principles of Parkinson’s fitness program:

  • Big movements that are self-limiting.
  • Loud continuous vocalization.
  • Adjustable to the individual.
  • Done together as a group with instructor leading.
  • All exercise should be regressable and safe enough so that the lowest level client can perform them with safety. On the same note all exercises should be progressable so that the most advance client can perform them with intensity.
  • Fun and energetic.

Program cost:

  • Members: $5/session or see front desk for package pricing.
  • Non-members: $8/session or see front desk for package pricing.

To sign up for the class, please visit the front desk of the fitness center. The participant must complete all necessary waivers.

Cardiopulmonary Rehabilitation

Cardiopulmonary Rehabilitation

The Cleveland Clinic Martin Health cardiac and pulmonary maintenance program is designed to meet the needs of patients and family members during and after hospitalization or cardiac/pulmonary event.

Cardiac rehabilitation

The cardiac rehabilitation program is designed for individuals who have one or more of the following:

  • History of a heart attack.
  • Coronary artery bypass surgery.
  • Stable angina.
  • Angioplasty stents.
  • Heart valve replacement or repair.
  • Heart and/or lung transplant.
  • Chronic CHF.

Phase I: education (inpatient)

Phase I is an in-hospital program. In this phase, patients learn how to modify heart and lung disease risk factors through a change in lifestyle behavior. Continued education for the patients and family members continues throughout the rehabilitation program via videos, classes and handouts.

Phase II: monitored exercise (outpatient through the Cardiopulmonary Rehabilitation Department)

  • A registered nurse establishes an exercise plan designed to meet individual needs.
  • Up to 36, sixty-minute EKG-monitored exercise sessions.
  • Educational programs on coronary risk reduction and lifestyle modification.
  • Licensed dietitian available to address dietary needs of patients.

Upon completion of the program, patients are ready and able to continue their home exercise program or join the maintenance program (Phase III) at any one of the three Martin Health & Fitness Centers.

Phase III & IV: maintenance programs (outpatient through Cleveland Clinic Martin Health & Fitness Centers)

  • Designed for patients who want to continue an exercise program.
  • Closely supervised non-EKG-monitored exercise program by a trained health & fitness specialist.
  • Blood pressure, heart rate and oxygen saturation monitoring is provided at regular intervals.
  • Qualified patients are self-pay.

The pulmonary rehabilitation program is designed for individuals who have one or more of the following:

  • Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).
  • Emphysema.
  • Chronic Bronchitis.
  • Asthma.
  • Bronchiectasis.

Upon completion of this program, patients are ready and able to continue their home exercise program or join the maintenance program at any one of the three Martin Health and Fitness Centers.

Post-physical therapy exercise provides fitness services for clients who have completed physical therapy and are referred by a clinician (we accept referrals from clinicians outside the Cleveland Clinic network) to continue their plan of care.

The goals of post-therapy exercise:

  • Bridge the gap between health care and fitness.
  • Allow clients in the post-rehab stages of their recovery to achieve physical fitness.

How to get started:

  • Step 1: Receive your Stay on Target form from your therapist or physician.
  • Step 2: Come into one of our four fitness centers with your completed Stay on Target form to get a tour and to schedule your first orientation with a fitness specialist.
