About G. Jay Bishop, MD

G. Jay Bishop, MD, is co-Associate Section Head of Vascular Medicine and a specialist in blood vessel disorders in the Section of Vascular Medicine in the Tomsich Family Department of Cardiovascular Medicine, Sydell and Arnold Miller Family Heart, Vascular & Thoracic Institute. He is board-certified in Internal Medicine and Vascular Medicine and is certified as a Registered Physician in Vascular Interpretation. Dr. Bishop sees patients at Cleveland Clinic main campus and the Avon Richard E. Jacobs, Twinsburg and Willoughby health centers.

Specialty Interests: New oral anticoagulants, adverse effects of anticoagulants, heparin-induced thrombocytopenia, blood clots, hypercoagulable states (thrombophilia), deep vein thrombosis (DVT), pulmonary embolism, thrombosis in unusual locations, inferior vena cava filters, general vascular medicine, peripheral arterial disease (PAD), unusual vascular disorders, including erythromelalgia, pernio, lymphedema and lipedema

Experience: Dr. Bishop has over 20 years’ experience in the diagnosis and management of all types of blood vessel disorders and diseases, including blood clots, peripheral artery disease and atherosclerosis. His expertise includes skin and wound debridement and noninvasive vascular testing. Dr. Bishop established the vascular medicine program at University of Pittsburgh Medical Center Hamot Heart, Vascular & Thoracic Institute in Erie, Pa., in 2014.

Success Rates: The Section of Vascular Medicine at Cleveland Clinic is one of the most active vascular medicine programs in the United States. Our specialists treat patients with a wide variety of vascular problems, including all forms of arterial, venous, and lymphatic disorders; thrombotic disorders and hypercoagulable states. They also provide wound care and management of risk factors for heart and vascular disease and are experts in the use of the new oral anticoagulants (blood thinners).  The Section of Vascular Medicine offers specialty clinics for patients with various disorders, including fibromuscular dysplasia and lymphedema and subspecialty care such as retrieval of inferior vena cava filters and endovenous laser ablation (minimally invasive treatment for varicose veins). Education: Dr. Bishop began his medical career as a medic in the US Air Force while working toward his undergraduate degree at the University of New Hampshire. After serving in the Air Force for four years and completing his bachelor’s degree in philosophy, he earned his medical degree with highest honors from Ross University School of Medicine, Portsmouth, Dominica, West Indies. Dr. Bishop completed his internship and residency in internal medicine at St. Francis Medical Center, Pittsburgh Pa., where he was named chief medical resident during his final year of training. He was in private practice in internal medicine for more than 20 years before transitioning to full time vascular medicine in 2014. He was appointed to the Cleveland Clinic medical staff in 2019.

Publications and Speaking: Dr. Bishop was a contributing author to the Society for Vascular Medicine’s Pulmonary Embolus Toolkit and co-editor of the
Society’s Peripheral Artery Disease Toolkit and was the lead author on a paper published in 2019 in Journal of Vascular Surgery Cases and Innovative Techniques. He has presented at the Society for Vascular Medicine (SVM) Annual Sessions, speaking on treatments for vascular and lymphatic diseases and has made numerous local and regional presentations on these and other vascular topics.

Dr. Bishop is a Fellow of the American College of Physicians and the Society for Vascular Medicine (SVM). He serves on multiple SVM committees and currently is a member of the SVM Board of Trustees.

About Dr. Bishop: “It’s been said that if you love what you do, you will never work a day in your life.  I truly found my passion in life when I was fortunate enough to specialize in vascular medicine. This specialty allows me to engage with patients on a daily basis and help them navigate through their vascular problems as their advocate and vascular care specialist. I see patients with a wide variety of vascular diseases, and my general internal medicine background provides me with a great fund of resources to augment their vascular care. Seeing patients on a daily basis provides me with both intellectual stimulation and the satisfaction of helping patients through their vascular medical journey.”

Leisure Activities: In his leisure time, Dr. Bishop enjoys spending time with his family, coaching high school hockey, boating on Lake Erie and volunteering in his local community on several non-profit boards.  He also serves as a town councilman for his community.
