Donald Sussman Distinguished Chair in Heart and Vascular Research. Dr. Navia is also Professor of Surgery at Cleveland Clinic Lerner College of Medicine. Dr. Navia is an internationally known cardiovascular and thoracic surgeon.
Specialty interests: Adult-acquired heart disease, minimally invasive video-assisted cardiac surgery, off-pump coronary artery bypass surgery, minimally invasive mitral and aortic valve surgery, tricuspid valve repair and replacement, transcatheter aortic, mitral and tricuspid valve procedures, surgical treatment of complex multivalve endocarditis, Commando Procedure and Hemi-Commando Procedure for double valve endocarditis, aortic valve homograft surgery, and multiple valve cardiac reoperations.
Number of Procedures Performed: Cleveland Clinic performs more than 4,000 heart surgeries each year. All Cleveland Clinic cardiac surgeons complete between 300-400 cardiac cases per year.
Success rates: Among top U.S. hospitals for cardiac surgery, Cleveland Clinic’s volume is the highest with the best quality outcomes. You can view success rates for specific procedures at http://my.clevelandclinic.org/heart/about-heart-vascular-institute/treatment-outcomes.aspx
Education and Training: Dr. Navia is board certified in Cardiovascular Surgery and General Surgery. He earned his medical degree from the School of Medicine at the National University of La Plata in Buenos Aires, Argentina. He completed his internships and residencies in general surgery, cardiovascular surgery and cardiothoracic surgery in Argentinian hospitals.
Dr. Navia received a fellowship in cardiothoracic surgery from the Cleveland Clinic in 1994. During his fellowship and residency at Cleveland Clinic, Dr. Navia served as Chief Resident for one year. He has received the Rene Favaloro International Fellow Award and the Dr. Charles H. Bryan Clinical Excellence Award. Research, Publications and Speaking: Dr. Navia has been a co-investigator for several clinical research trials. Dr. Navia’s research focuses on robotic cardiac surgery, video-assisted minimally invasive cardiac surgery, and a stentless mitral valve — an original design for mitral valve replacement that is being used across the country. He has developed different cannulas (tubes for needles and surgical instruments) for pulmonary bypass and has designed a proximal anastomosis device to avoid clamping the aorta during cardiac surgery. He has also developed a percutaneous mitral valve ring and prosthesis. He is extensively involved in research to investigate new and more effective treatments for patients with heart failure.
Dr. Navia is a national leader in successfully and safely utilizing various techniques in minimally invasive off-pump bypass surgery, as well as transcatheter aortic, mitral and tricuspid valve procedures. He also is involved in advances in cardiac resynchronization therapy and mechanical circulatory device therapy.
Dr. Navia has published many articles and abstracts in national and international professional publications and is a manuscript reviewer and editorial board member for several medical journals. Dr. Navia organizes seminars and symposia on advanced topics in cardiothoracic surgery and presents his work at major international conferences with leading physicians from around the world.
About Dr. Navia: My greatest strength as a heart surgeon is the ability to treat patients with even the most complex medical problems. Many times, these treatments involve advanced techniques and innovative approaches to achieve the best possible results. I have a passion for innovation, and it is extremely gratifying to invent a new way to help a patient who otherwise may not have been able to have a good outcome.
Leisure time activities: Dr. Navia enjoys spending time with his family, especially on the beaches of Argentina and skiing together in the winter

There are not enough words that I can say in regard to the care, expertise and overall concern, that I was given with Dr. Navia. His beside manner, his explanations were perfect. The entire team of Surgeons worked as one making me feel as though I was part of their team. Dr. Brozzi, as his former patient, continued to visit and reassured me throughout my week in the hospital, so thankful for his care as well. I have given praise to this team to my family and friends and will continue to do so.
