Overview
Your vision is an important part of your overall health. Optometrists are experts in eye care. And they can help protect your sight by doing routine eye exams. These tests help them find changes in your vision and treat problems you might be having with your eyes. Optometrists can diagnose and treat common eye issues, like pink eye, eye floaters and double vision. They can also diagnose and monitor more complex ones like diabetes-related retinopathy, macular degeneration, glaucoma and cataracts. They can prescribe glasses and fit you for contact lenses.
Optometrists can prescribe medications, but they don’t do surgery. If your eye condition is advanced or you need surgery, including laser procedures and injections, we may refer you to an ophthalmologist. Unlike optometrists, ophthalmologists are doctors of medicine (MD) or doctors of osteopathy (DO). They have specialized training and experience diagnosing and treating any condition affecting your eyes and vision. And they can also do eye surgery to treat conditions like macular degeneration, retinal tears, cataracts, glaucoma and advanced diabetes-related retinopathy.
