Description
This elective provides medical students with a comprehensive introduction to adult psychiatry, focusing on the diagnosis, treatment, and management of common and complex psychiatric disorders in adult populations. The course offers a combination of clinical experience and didactic learning to provide an in-depth understanding of psychiatric conditions such as depression, anxiety, psychotic disorders, mood disorders, and personality disorders.
Objectives
- Students will gain exposure to a wide variety of patients who are hospitalized during a life crisis. Under direct supervision of attending faculty, students will be invited to broaden and deepen their understanding of these patients by actively participating in their daily care, including medication management.
- Students will be challenged to sharpen and improve their skills in eliciting patients’ stories, formulating diagnoses, interpreting nonverbal communication, and in creating intentionally therapeutic dialogue. These enhanced skills will become vital to the practice of any medical specialty.
