About the Clerkship

  • Location: Akron General
  • Duration: 4 weeks

Rotation Description

This rotation is an introduction to the acute care of the patient with an undifferentiated chief complaint. It provides the M4 medical student with the knowledge to understand the approach to emergency department patients.  Particular emphasis will be placed on the assessment of the acutely ill patient as well as the development of a differential diagnosis.  The expectation is that the student learns to evaluate and manage the patient from their presentation to the disposition from the emergency department.

Course Objectives

Upon completion of the Emergency Medicine rotation the student will be able to:

  1. Demonstrate a methodical approach to the patient who presents to the emergency department with an undifferentiated chief complaint.
  2. Demonstrate skill in the development of a differential diagnosis for the acute care of the undifferentiated chief complaint.
  3. Demonstrate proficiency in the evaluation of patients with different chief complaints.
  4. Identify knowledge deficits and their remedy in the care of certain patients that results in practice-based learning.
  5. Identify gaps in care for patients that present to the ED.
