By combining the expertise of the top skull base neurosurgeons and neurotologists with our reconstructive team, we provide novel approaches to complex cranial and skull base problems. Surgeries which require removal of tumors that will affect either head or facial appearance or the function of facial nerves are addressed in a multidisciplinary fashion. When possible, we remove tumors and repair resultant defects during the same surgery. Our surgeons have developed several unique techniques which have drastically decreased postoperative discomfort, length of hospital stay and overall recovery time in order to return patients as rapidly as possible to normal appearance and function.
We approach cranial and skull base tumors with input from experts in neurology, radiation therapy and medical oncology. This broad input allows us to fully assess all possible treatment options prior to considering surgery and to plan for physical, speech and other adjunct therapies which may be needed.
Some skull base tumors can affect facial nerve function either prior to or after treatment, resulting in facial weakness or even complete paralysis. Our treatment strategies are designed to restore or preserve this function to the fullest extent possible. However, if facial nerve function is compromised, our team combines re-innervation (reconnection of nerve signals) and muscle transfer techniques to return individuals to as near normal facial appearance and function as possible.
