Do you become short of breath doing even simple tasks? Are you more of a spectator instead of a participant? Have you been diagnosed with emphysema, chronic bronchitis, asthma, sarcoidosis or pulmonary fibrosis?
If you can answer “yes” to any of these, you could benefit from the Pulmonary Rehabilitation Program located inside Union Hospital. Under your doctor’s guidance and within your limits, our staff will help improve your breathing and endurance.
For up to 12 weeks you will meet with a small group of other Pulmonary Rehabilitation patients for exercise and education sessions. The sessions start at a very slow pace, building toward your program goals. You may use a treadmill, cycle, or very light weights. Others may do stair climbing and low-level aerobic exercise with a focus on activities for daily living. During your education sessions, you will learn about your condition, medications, and your program goals.
During exercise sessions a rehabilitation specialist closely watches your blood pressure, heart rate, and breathing. We will follow your progress and make changes as needed.
Patients who complete Pulmonary Rehabilitation are:
- Better able to exercise, work, and perform daily activities.
- Able to do more with less effort.
- Better able to control breathing.
- Able to lead a more active and productive life.
