Overview

The diabetes education program at Hillcrest Hospital is accredited by the American Association of Diabetes Educators. Our program provides a variety of adult education services for those with Type 1 diabetes, Type 2 diabetes and Gestational diabetes.  We also provide Medical Nutrition Therapy for other chronic diseases. We cover all seven content areas of diabetes self-management education.  Some topics include blood glucose monitoring, exercise, nutrition education, carbohydrate counting and coping skills.

2017, “Studies have found that diabetes self-management education is associated with improved diabetes
 knowledge and self-care behaviors, lower A1C, lower self-reported weight, improved quality of life, healthy coping, and reduced health care costs.

Types of Diabetes

Types of Diabetes

Type 1 and Type 2 Diabetes

A comprehensive diabetes self-management program consists of 2 or 4 group sessions spaced out over a month period including 6-10 hours of comprehensive education. Classes are held Monday afternoons.  New classes are offered every month.

Gestational Diabetes

This class is designed to educate pregnant women on blood glucose monitoring, meal planning/carbohydrate counting and insulin administration (if necessary).

Appointments

To accommodate those with special needs, individual appointments are provided on an as-needed basis.

Insurance

Outpatient services may be reimbursable when your attendance is by physician order. Your individual insurance policy defines the extent of your coverage. Please verify with your insurance carrier for coverage prior to the start of the class.
