About Us
Doctors in the Cleveland Clinic Department of Infectious Disease diagnose and treat patients with a wide range of both opportunistic and acquired infections, using evidence-based national guidelines.
We provide around-the-clock inpatient care, including three general infectious disease consultation services as well as dedicated solid organ transplant, bone marrow transplant, bone and joint infections and neuroinfections.
Our Mission
The mission of the Cleveland Clinic is to provide better care of the sick, investigation into their problems, and further the education of those who serve. In pursuit of this mission, the Department of Infectious Disease provides content expertise and oversight through its Hospital Epidemiology and Antimicrobial Stewardship section for the Infection Prevention and Antimicrobial Stewardship teams. Physicians in this section are committed to providing pragmatic solutions that optimize patient care across Cleveland Clinic Health System.
The Department of Infectious Disease is integrated within the Respiratory Institute where we are guided by the following principles:
- Maintaining excellence in patient care across the continuum of care
- This includes providing a medical home for our patient with HIV and patients that discharged on parenteral antimicrobial agents via our Community Outpatient Parenteral Antimicrobial Therapy Program (CoPAT).
- Excellence in medical education through our Infectious Disease Fellowship
- Provision of opportunities for our staff to grow by partnering with colleagues in multidisciplinary teams organized around specific medical conditions.
- Offering inpatient infectious disease consultative services 7 days a week and providing continuity of care in our specialty outpatient clinics.
Services We Offer
Inpatient Consultative Services
- Three general infectious disease services that treat patients for an extensive range of infections, including:
- Urinary tract infections, HIV, diabetic foot infections, C. Diff, tuberculosis, histoplasmosis, cyptococcosis, and many more.
- One bone & joint infections service that specializes in treating patients with:
- Osteomyelitis, total knee and hip replacement infections, infections in total knee and hip arthroplasty infections, and other bone & joint related infections.
- One endocarditis service that specialists attends to patients with diagnosed endocarditis in addition to:
- Pacemaker, cardiac electronic implantable device, and ventricular assist device
- One neurological infections service that oversees central nervous system infections related to:
- Cranial, cerebrospinal fluid, post craniotomy, bone flap, ventriculo-peritoneal shunt, and deep brain stimulator infections.
- Meningitis, cranial abscesses, skull base osteomyelitis, neurosyphilis, cerebral malaria, etc.
- Two transplant infection services, which address infections in patients that have received a bone marrow transplant, as well as assess pre- and post-transplant infections for heart, lung, kidney, liver, intestines, pancreas, etc. organ transplants.

Locations
Preparing for Your Appointment at Cleveland Clinic's Main Campus
When you arrive at our main campus:
- Please check in at G10 with one of our Patient Service Representatives (PSR), where you will be directed to the Infectious Disease Front Desk, G20.
- While you wait for one of our Medical Assistants to take you to an exam room, you will be able to review and update your current medications and demographic information.
- Please notify the Front Desk if you have been waiting 20 minutes or longer:
- One of our Medical Assistants will call your name to take your vital signs and review your medications with you before seeing your physician.
- Your physician will review your medical history and symptoms to evaluate your concerns.
After you have completed the visit with your physician please return to the G-21 Infectious Diseases Front Desk to check-out and make follow-up appointments as needed.

Specialty Clinics
Our Specialty Infectious Disease Clinics are incorporated into our Outpatient Infectious Disease clinic where we offer a continuum of care to our patients seen while in the hospital.
Bone and Joint Infections
Our Bone and Joint Infections Clinic specializes in treating infections of the musculoskeletal system and participates in active research including includes diagnostic algorithms using traditional and molecular techniques, and process improvement in the management of bone and joint infections.
Community Outpatient Antimicrobial Therapy (CoPAT)
The Community Outpatient Antimicrobial Therapy (CoPAT) Clinic specializes in services and treatment for patients discharged from the hospital with IV antibiotic completion of IV antibiotic therapy.
Endocarditis Clinic
The Endocarditis Clinic focuses on consults of infections of native heart valves, prosthetic heart valves, vascular devices such as pacemakers and LVADs (left ventricular assist devices) and aortic or other vascular grafts.
Granuloma
The Granuloma Clinic evaluates and manages patients with granulomatous disease referred from the pulmonary clinic, chest surgery service, rheumatology clinic, primary care physicians and other specialties, as well as self-referrals.
HIV Infections
The HIV Infections Clinic provides patient centered visits for those who have been exposed to or diagnosed with HIV/AIDS. This multi-disciplinary team of physicians, pharmacists, social workers, case managers, and medical assistants work hand in hand to provide specialized care.
Neurological Infections
The Neurological Infections Clinic focuses on treating infection of the brain, spinal cord, and its linings. These infections often require a multidisciplinary team approach involving, neurologists, neurosurgeons, neurointensive neuro-radiologists and neuro-pathologists.
Outpatient Clinic
Our outpatient infectious disease clinic has scheduled appointments for new referrals and established follow up patients. Each specialty sees patients both in the hospital and in the outpatient setting. We treat a wide array of infectious diseases, using evidence based-medicine and nationally published guidelines.
Transplant Infectious Disease
The Transplant Infectious Disease Clinic specializes in pre-transplant evaluations, infectious complications following bone marrow and solid organ transplantation and post-transplantation evaluations.
For Medical Professionals
Patient Referrals
We do require a physician referral, except for HIV and HIV Pre Exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) patients. Consults can be ordered through EPIC from Cleveland Clinic providers. Non-Cleveland Clinic providers and patients can call the Appointment Center at 216-444-2273 to initiate the referral process. Prior to making an appointment, we require a physician referral and review of records by one of our Infectious Disease physician staff. Please do not fax any information to our office until contacted by our Infectious Disease staff. Only requests following the above process will be reviewed.
Educational & Clinical Training
We provide excellent educational and clinical training opportunities in the field. Several medical students, residents and fellows from different disciplines/specialties rotate with us.
Infectious Disease Fellowship
Our Infectious Disease Fellowship Program is a three-year, clinically-oriented fellowship program offering broad exposure to almost every facet of infectious diseases. For those interested in transplant medicine, clinical microbiology training, and/or subspecialty areas within infectious diseases, this program offers intensive clinical training in these important areas. We strive to use the latest knowledge of best adult educational processes, and integrate an academic curriculum with robust clinical experiences.

In these videos doctors, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, nurses and pharmacists from the Cleveland Clinic will answer questions about different types of infections and how we prevent them. We will also talk about the things YOU can do to minimize your risk of infection after transplant. Please do not hesitate to ask your transplant clinician or coordinator if you have additional questions.
