What We Treat Services

Services

Mercy Hospital offers highly specialized neurosurgical procedures for complex spinal conditions, brain tumors and neurological disorders.

Minimally Invasive Spine Surgery

Our surgeons, sub-specialty trained in neurosurgery, provide you with the most innovative and effective surgical treatments available for back problems. We may use minimally invasive surgery if you have lumbar and cervical disk herniation, spinal stenosis, age-related wear on spinal disks, bones in your spine that slip out of place and disk degeneration.

Minimally invasive spine surgery offers several advantages over open surgery, including:

  • Minimally disrupting the normal tissues (muscles, ligaments, etc.).
  • A few tiny scars instead of one large scar.
  • Shorter hospital stay.
  • Less pain after surgery.
  • Faster recovery time.
  • Less blood loss during surgery.

Brain Tumors & Other Neurosurgical Conditions

Brain tumors, lesions and other serious conditions affecting your brain and nervous system are often in hard-to-reach areas, surrounded by delicate nerves and arteries. Mercy Hospital offers skilled neurosurgeons who treat some of the most complex brain tumors and neurological conditions.

In addition to traditional, open surgery, Gamma Knife® surgery is another way Mercy Hospital neurosurgeons treat hard-to-reach tumors and lesions. Gamma Knife surgery is a minimally invasive procedure that uses high-energy radiation therapy to pinpoint brain tumors and lesions. This treatment destroys them or keeps them from growing while not hurting nearby healthy brain tissue. Gamma Knife surgery may be an effective treatment option if you have:

  • Acoustic neuroma.
  • Arteriovenous malformations.
  • Brain tumors (cancerous and noncancerous).
  • Essential tremor.
  • Parkinson’s disease.
  • Trigeminal neuralgia.

Normal Pressure Hydrocephalus (NPH) Clinic

Are you having problems walking? Does it seem like you’re more forgetful? You may wonder if it’s dementia — but normal pressure hydrocephalus (NPH) might be the unexpected answer. And it’s treatable.

Visiting the Mercy Hospital NPH clinic

Normal pressure hydrocephalus can look a lot like dementia — but it’s not. When you have NPH, your brain has too much cerebrospinal fluid in it. This buildup causes pressure in the brain, leading to dementia-like symptoms. This often-underdiagnosed condition can happen to anyone but typically affects people aged 65 and over.

The good news? We can often effectively treat and manage this condition at our dedicated NPH clinic. With the right treatment, your symptoms may improve. Or, sometimes, they may even go away. Our team is ready to help.

You’ll start your treatment journey with a personalized evaluation with our team. This helps us pinpoint what’s going on — and find the best treatment plan for your needs.

Same-day testing

Our specialized clinic offers comprehensive same-day NPH testing. Tests can help our team rule out other health conditions and confirm a normal pressure hydrocephalus diagnosis. You may have:

  • A physical exam to check out your overall health and symptoms.
  • A neurological exam to test your sense of hearing, vision and touch and to check your muscle strength.
  • Gait testing so we can see your walking pattern (gait) and look for shuffling.
  • A spinal tap (lumbar puncture) to remove and test a small bit of spinal fluid.

Minimally invasive treatment

Your test results and symptoms will drive your treatment plan. You may need to have minimally invasive shunt placement surgery. This proven technique has helped many patients regain mobility and a more active life.

We do this procedure at our pain management center and plan for you to be able to go home the same day. During surgery, your neurosurgeon will insert a shunt (a thin tube) to help drain the extra fluid in your brain. This fluid moves to another part of your body, like your belly or chest, and your tissues reabsorb it.

Recovery and rehabilitation

When you return home after your surgery, you’ll follow a personalized home physical therapy program to help you recover your strength and improve your gait. You’ll also have regular follow-up appointments and testing so our team can track your progress.
