Akron General is Summit County's only designated Baby-Friendly birth facility, an initiative sponsored by the World Health Organization (WHO) and the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) to encourage and recognize hospitals that offer optimal care for infant feeding.
How breastfeeding can benefit mother and baby
Research on infant breastfeeding continues to uncover more evidence on the benefits of breastfeeding for both the infant and the mother. Breastfeeding will help decrease your baby’s chance of long-term diseases including diabetes, certain types of cancers and obesity. Breast milk is uniquely made to meet the specific health needs of your infant, especially for infants who are premature or have health challenges. Mothers also benefit from breastfeeding, including a decreased risk of breast cancer and osteoporosis.
How often should you nurse?
According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, a baby should be breastfed 8-12 times every 24 hours to establish a good milk supply, and to provide the baby with adequate nourishment. It is also recommended that breastfeeding continues for at least 12 months of the infant’s life.
