Overview
Interventional radiology is a subspecialty of radiology in which experts perform catheter-based procedures. Our interventional radiologists collaborate with multiple medical specialties across Cleveland Clinic Florida to diagnose and treat an extensive range of conditions. They offer innovative, advanced care with exceptional results.
Why Choose Cleveland Clinic Florida?
At Cleveland Clinic Florida, you receive care from interventional radiologists who are experts in the full array of tools and treatment options. You benefit from:
- Full range of expert treatments: Our board-certified, fellowship-trained interventional radiologists all have the expertise to treat multiple conditions and body systems with interventional radiology techniques. We offer advanced treatments not widely available in South Florida and the Treasure Coast, such as interventional oncology services, uterine artery embolization and solid organ transplant interventions.
- Coordinated, specialized team: Our interventional radiology team includes interventional radiology physicians, advanced practice providers, nurses, schedulers and nurse coordinators. As a patient, you have easy access to a whole team who helps you coordinate appointments, answers your questions and provides advanced treatments.
- Convenient virtual visits: You may schedule your initial interventional radiology consultation as a virtual visit. This allows you to meet with your physician, review imaging results and discuss your care plan without traveling long distances or even leaving your home.
- Full-spectrum services: Our interventional radiology services are located within our Cleveland Clinic Florida hospitals. This means we can offer a collection of advanced technologies and resources, unlike an off-site clinic. We closely collaborate with specialty providers so that you get the answers and care you need promptly.
Services We Offer
Our specialists provide an extensive range of interventional radiology procedures. These procedures may be diagnostic or we may use these techniques to deliver treatments. We collaborate with multiple teams across Cleveland Clinic Florida to treat a wide array of conditions.
Vascular conditions
Vascular diseases affect your circulatory system, the large network of organs and vessels responsible for blood flow throughout your body. Our interventional radiologists offer minimally invasive, targeted treatments for vascular conditions, including:
- Abdominal aortic aneurysm.
- Atherosclerosis.
- Blood clots.
- Deep vein thrombosis (DVT).
- Peripheral artery disease (PAD).
- Pulmonary embolism.
- Stroke and cerebrovascular disorders.
Interventional treatments for vascular disease may include:
- Angioplasty: This procedure restores blood flow in narrowed or blocked arteries. An interventional radiologist guides a catheter with a small, deflated balloon to your artery. When it’s in position, they inflate the balloon to widen the artery and increase blood flow.
- Stenting: Interventional radiologists may use stenting along with angioplasty to help keep arteries open. They place a small mesh tube called a stent into the artery. Sometimes the stents are coated with a medication that helps prevent blood clots.
- Thrombolysis: Sometimes called fibrinolytic therapy, thrombolysis is a procedure to break up or remove blood clots. We guide a catheter to the blood clot, then use medicines or mechanical devices to remove or dissolve the clot.
Oncology
Our interventional radiologists work alongside cancer treatment teams to offer both routine services, such as biopsies and port implantation, and innovative, leading-edge treatments, including:
- Chemoembolization: We deliver chemotherapy drugs and a substance called a blocking agent directly to blood vessels supplying blood to a tumor. This treatment targets cancerous cells and cuts off blood supply in one procedure. Chemoembolization is most commonly a treatment for liver cancer.
- Cryoablation: We deliver extremely cold temperatures to tumors via a needle. Cryoablation freezes and destroys cancer cells.
- Microwave ablation: This technique also uses electromagnetic waves to destroy cancer cells. We place a thin microwave antenna directly in the tumor. Then we send an electromagnetic wave through the antenna to destroy tumor tissue.
- Palliative interventional radiology: We offer treatments for symptom relief or pain management to patients with end-stage cancers.
- Radiofrequency ablation: This treatment uses radio waves to heat and destroy tumor cells. We place a probe directly in the tumor, and the probe sends radio waves to surrounding tissue.
- Y90 Radioembolization: Using catheters and X-ray guidance, we send concentrated radiation therapy directly to a tumor. The interventional radiologist injects radioactive beads into the blood vessels that supply a tumor. This treatment effectively treats tumors while reducing radiation exposure to the rest of your body.
Organ transplants
Our interventional radiologists also care for patients undergoing organ transplants. We provide complex interventions for heart, kidney and liver transplants, a service not many institutions have the expertise to offer. We may perform procedures such as angioplasty and stenting to treat complications and improve success rates of transplant surgeries.
Gynecologic health
Our interventional radiologists treat a variety of gynecological health conditions, including:
- Chronic pelvic pain.
- Pelvic congestion syndrome, chronic pelvic pain caused by increased pressure in your pelvic veins.
- Uterine fibroids.
Uterine artery embolization
Uterine artery embolization is an advanced procedure to treat uterine fibroids without surgery. We inject small particles into the blood vessels supplying the fibroids during the procedure. The particles cut off the blood supply to fibroids, causing them to shrink and die. For many, this effectively relieves pain and bleeding from uterine fibroids.
People assigned male at birth
Interventional treatments may be appropriate for those with health conditions such as:
We may offer prostate artery embolization to treat BPH, an enlarged prostate. Your specialist injects small particles into your blood vessels that supply blood to your prostate. The particles restrict blood supply, causing your prostate to shrink, relieving symptoms of BPH.
