Overview
Physicians of general gastroenterology have broad interests in gastrointestinal diseases and expertise to evaluate and manage challenging diagnostic cases.
Patients may be referred to general gastroenterology with gastrointestinal symptoms that are not initially clearly related to a particular GI subspecialty. Patients may be referred to related subspecialty or other medical specialties for continued care after evaluation.
Conditions
General gastroenterology manages:
- Disorders of malabsorption.
- Peptic ulcer disease and other manifestations of Helicobacter pylori infection.
- Gastric cancer and gastric polyps.
- Radiation enteropathy.
- Radiation colopathy.
- Colonic diverticular disease.
- AIDS-related diarrheal illnesses.
- Eosinophilic gastroenteritis.
- Infectious colitis or infectious enteritis.
Some of these nonspecific symptoms include the following:
- Subacute or chronic diarrhea.
- Weight loss of unknown cause.
- Subacute or chronic abdominal pain.
- Nausea and vomiting.

Nutrition services and lifestyle changes regarding digestive disorders
Our Center for Human Nutrition is part of our Digestive Disease and Surgery Institute. Nutrition plays a large role in treating the symptoms of having a digestive related disorder. Our Center is one of the only centers in the nation offering comprehensive services, including specialized teams for nutrition therapy, intestinal rehabilitation and nutrition support.
