Overview
Our Bone Marrow Failure and Cytopenias Program was founded on the realization that patients with uncommon diseases can only receive world class care when their providers have a vast experience in seeing patients with these rare diagnoses and who are familiar with all the intricacies of care needed to treat these uncommon, hematologic conditions. A select number of hematologists at Cleveland Clinic with a long-standing clinical and research track record in these diseases have organized working groups which combine multiple specialists from several disciplines who diagnose and treat these rare conditions.
Multi-disciplinary team
Our team consists of subspecialties involved in the care of these rare disorders including hematologists, bone marrow transplant specialists, hematopathologists and geneticists. We are also supported by pharmacy specialists, highly trained nursing care and a clinical trial research team. We have a long-standing track record of collaboration with patient advocacy groups. Cleveland Clinic Hematologist and program director Jaroslaw Maciejewski, MD, PhD is a member of multiple medical advisory groups that help with national recommendations and treatment standards for these diseases.
We are a top research center for Bone Marrow Failures and Cytopenias in the United States. Program Director Jaroslaw Maciejewski MD, PhD, is an internationally renowned expert in these diseases. Our program has a track record of pivotal discoveries in this field with over 350 publications and participation in crucial clinical trials for these diseases. Eligible patients may participate in laboratory research and clinical registries.
Volumes
We are one of the largest referral centers in the United States. Since 2002, we have seen more than:
- 350 patients with aplastic anemia.
- 280 patients with LGL and cytopenias.
- 250 patients with Myelodysplastic Syndromes (MDS).
- 100 patients with Paroxysmal nocturnal hemoglobinuria (PNH).
- 60 patients with pure red cell aplasia.
Our team has performed over 50 allogeneic bone marrow transplant procedures for aplastic anemia. We treat patients from all over the United States and internationally and provide the option of virtual visit consultations to enable access to our expertise for patients who cannot travel.

What We Treat
Bone marrow failure and cytopenias include a variety of diseases and syndromes. Most hematologists include myelodysplastic syndromes in the bone marrow failure classification and there is a great deal of overlap. Others consider myelodysplastic syndromes as a form of myeloid leukemia or pre-leukemia. We also collaborate with pediatric hematologists and oncologists in the diagnosis and management of inherited forms of bone marrow failure occurring in childhood.
