The Andrology Laboratory at Cleveland Clinic's Fertility Center in Beachwood offers a full range of specialized tests and services for the evaluation and treatment of male infertility.
Our services
We are pleased to offer our male patients convenient, same-site andrology services in an atmosphere that is attractive, private, and comfortable.
In addition to semen analysis, semen cryopreservation, and intrauterine inseminations, we perform in vitro fertilization (IVF) procedures and sperm preparation for intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) in our attached surgical suite and IVF laboratory. We also offer the convenience of safe, reliable sperm cryopreservation at a minimal cost. For patients planning cancer treatments, we can provide counseling and options for cryopreservation before initiating chemotherapy, radiation, or surgery.
Advanced procedures
For patients requiring more advanced surgical sperm harvest procedures, same-day procedures can be performed in our building.
Patients benefit from the expertise of the clinical embryology staff on hand to evaluate the harvested sperm.
Testicular and epididymal sperm can be cryopreserved for future use by the IVF lab itself. Recently, the IVF laboratory has made significant advances in the area of single sperm cryopreservation. This technique offers new hope to men with severely impaired spermatogenesis, allowing them to potentially bank very small numbers of sperm for a future IVF cycle.
Specialized tests
Cleveland Clinic's Fertility Center at Beachwood offers comprehensive male fertility testing, sperm evaluation and processing IVF. This is facilitated by advanced microscopic and videographic equipment. Some of the specialized tests performed at the Fertility Center are listed below:
- Sperm Morphology Classification using Kruger’s Strict Criteria.
- Sperm Viability Testing.
- Hypo-osmotic Swelling Test (HOS).
- Testing for Anti-sperm antibodies.
- Testing for Leukocytospermia.
Our Team
We are proud of our highly skilled laboratory personnel, all of whom have completed specialized training in infertility laboratory techniques. The IVF/Andrology laboratories are under the direction of Nina Desai, PhD, HCLD.
We perform nearly 1,200 intrauterine inseminations and 1,000 semen analyses each year, in addition to sperm preparation for IVF procedures. The laboratory is accredited by the American College of Pathologists and has CLIA certification through the Department of Health and Human Services.
