Each week in the Taussig Cancer Institute, patients and their families can enjoy a pleasant diversion from their rounds of treatments and physician appointments – high tea. At 2:30 p.m. every Wednesday in The Bistro, high tea is served to patients, their families and friends, and employees who appreciate the opportunity to relax for an hour and socialize.
The event, which debuted on Feb. 21, 2007, was initiated by Elizabeth Stein, head of Cleveland Clinic’s Volunteer Services Department, and Margaret Gillota, of Nursing World Class Service.
The mission statement for the event describes it as "an elegant activity and healing ritual designed to enhance the patient experience," Ms. Stein says. It is intended to create "a civilized pause in an atmosphere of comfort in the middle of a hectic day," as well as to "reflect a time of celebration fostered by collegiality and companionship that will enrich the empathetic culture of Cleveland Clinic."
The program is warmly received, Ms. Gillota and Ms. Stein say, with plenty of support from enthusiastic volunteers and generous donations from local businesses. Classics Restaurant has donated brocade tablecloths, Wilhelmy Flowers donated floral centerpieces, and Harlan Diamond, owner of Executive Caterers at Landerhaven, donated pastries.
Each month, a different theme is planned, reflecting seasonal changes and holidays. Some volunteers will play the piano and on other occasions, musicians from the Cleveland Music School Settlement will perform.
